Snow Day Forthcoming (For Some) on Friday

When I was in school, I loved snow days.

There was just something about waking up, turning on the TV, and seeing if your school system had made the call yet. If you saw your school come across the screen, celebration ensued.

If your system wasn’t listed, the debate on when and if the call might be made raged until it came in or it was time to leave.

Those were the simpler days of course. We have had a couple of “snow” days at Ski Southeast in my seven-plus years (that’s not counting those where we go play on the snow), but even those aren’t quite as fun.

Today’s kids get a different snow day experience as most systems use a one-call to pass along the decision – even if it has to come at 5:30a. This school year has brought a TON of new challenges to our systems, and with the virtual nature/option of school, there is no waking up to find out if you get a school day or not.

I am not going to lie – I am going to miss that early morning call that my wife, who is a school teacher, gets to announce a snow day as she would most likely have received tomorrow morning (but don’t tell her that).

Snow days are great news for us because most of the time it means fresh snow to ride, slide, and play on with typically fantastic conditions.

Friday is looking really, really promising for a snow day/all-virtual day for many of our mountain schools as the next system marches into the area late tonight and tomorrow.

Snowshoe was looking peaceful this morning.

That system is going to bring a mixed bag of weather across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, but it will be mostly snow at the North Carolina and even the Virginia resorts.

Unfortunately, Snowshoe and the northern resorts may be left out of any significant accumulation, but we will have to wait to see how the system tracks.

As of this morning, the North Carolina resorts look to receive around 4-8″ of heavy, wet snow with locally higher amounts possible.

Brad will probably share an update later this evening or first thing tomorrow morning on the Friday system and even a couple of systems he is watching for next week.

Exciting times for sure.

Today looks to be a fantastic day out on the slopes as it is kind of a calm before storm type day.

You can full the full snow report over at the Snow Reports page.

The Cheat Mountain Magic continued to produce overnight as Snowshoe picked up another inch of natural snow, while Canaan and Timberline kept their snow run alive as they received a heavy dusting.

The mountain operation crews took full advantage of the temperatures last night as most resorts were able to crank up snowmaking operations with impressive results.

This is a great time to #ThankASnowmaker!

There were a couple of social posts that grabbed our attention yesterday.

The first was from the Weather Channel as they visited Sugar Mountain to talk skiing and snowboarding this season.

It is awesome to see our area get some national attention.

Wintergreen posted a cool looking shot with an update for their operating hours.

The slopes are looking incredible this morning so if you can slip out and play, you won’t be disappointed.

That does it for today, but until next time, #ThinkSnow!
