Today’s Skier’s Forecast video by Meteorologist Brad Panovich is titled "Winter Returns" and that could really be the theme to the entire season. Winter has definately been on a full court press this season bringing enough natural snows to keep the ground covered in a blanket of snow that ranges from a few inches to a foot of snow in some locations of North Carolina and Virginia to more than two feet around Tucker and Pocahontas Counties in West Virginia.
Brad says that we have a quick moving clipper system moving through today that is a pretty potent system that is defining the dynamics of the jet stream and actually digging a deep trough across the eastern half of the country. By Wednesday one southern branch of the storm will sort of move through and by Thursday those northwest flow snows that we’ve seen numerous times this season will again be depositing snow across all of the ski areas of the Southeast and Mid Atlantic!
Snowshoe, Timberline, Canaan, Winterplace and Wisp will see the snow pick up a little bit today – particularly this afternoon. Those areas have already seen another 1/2 to one inch of snow in the last 24 hours. They will see a bit more light snow today, but as those northwest snows kick in on Wednesday the WV resorts will see those waves of snow pick up first and then they will develop into the rest of the Southeast’s ski areas into Wednesday afternoon and evening – into Thursday when the best accumulations will happen. We will feel like we are revisting LAST week when we seemed to get some light, accumulating snowfall nearly every day.
This snow and colder temperatures will guarantee yet ANOTHER awesome week and weekend of skiing and snowboarding! Then after an awesome weekend, we’re looking ahead to Monday and Tuesday of NEXT week when it looks like MORE SNOW is heading into the region!
It looks like 3-6" of new snow is in the forecast for most of the High Country area of Western North Carolina from this evening through Thursday and deeper snowfall as we look north into the West Virginia mountains.
So we’ll see some new natural snow to deposit on top of all the snows of the last month that are mounding up across the region. Then most of the weather gurus are already looking at the NEXT low moving into the Gulf for early next week. Models are already favoring a good, northerly track for that one with the potential of (you guessed it) yet another significant snowfall for our area.
This is a winter that simply keeps on giving us cold temps and natural snows. Many of the guys on the messageboard have emailed us about "backcountry trips" that have taken them off the slopes and onto some challenging nordic terrain off the Blue Ridge Parkway, Roan Mountain, Cumberland Gap and other areas that we’ve not seen skiing on in years.
Of course the ski areas are what we’re all about and when our ski areas have not made snow because they didn’t need to AND they’re measuring from 86" – 121" of base depth (like that at Appalachian Ski Mountain) you KNOW that this is one wonderful season to ride no matter which of the ski areas of the Southeast are your favorites.
