It is hard to believe it is time to start counting fogs.

As the last day of July (seriously – how did we get here so fast) draws to an end, it means that the Ski Southeast machine is about to start cranking back up.

The annual sign the season is fast approaching is when it is time to start counting foggy mornings in August.

What is so special about August fogs you may ask?

Weatherlore shares that for each foggy morning in the month of August will equal one snow in the winter. Even more, the mountain tradition is to place a bean in the jar for each foggy

morning to keep count.
Last season, we tallied 21 beans in the jar at the end of August. 2020 finished with 26, while we had 15 and 22 beans, respectively, in 2018 and 2017.

2016 saw August come to a close with 21 fogs.

The more fogs the better right?

As per usual, we will keep an updated count throughout the month.

There is some other weatherlore that we will look into as we move through August and start shaking off the cobwebs as our “unofficial” preseason also seems to kick off in the month of August.

That does for today, but be sure to check back as we start counting the fogs of August.

Until next time, #ThinkSnow!
