Thanksgiving week has arrived.

It is going to look a lot different than what we were hoping for but things are starting to look up.

This morning, Cataloochee and Sugar remain open for play on this overcast Sunday morning.

Sugar is still open from the top with five slopes open with two lifts in operation. They are reporting an 8-20″ base with a loose and frozen granular surface.

Cataloochee is playing on five slopes as well with three lifts spinning. They are reporting a granular surface with an 8-14″ base.

If Mother Nature had cooperated sooner, we had hoped to see Beech Mountain and App Ski Mountain open for the season, but both resorts postponed opening day with a plan of opening once the weather cooperates for snowmaking.

Snowshoe was also scheduled to open this week, but they have pushed their opening date back to Friday, Dec. 4.

On the flip side, it is great to have two resorts open considering how unseasonable warm that November started. The weather pattern does look promising after the Thanksgiving holiday.

The crew at Snowshoe and the northern resorts may have a couple of nights of snowmaking to begin the week before things break their way next weekend.

The North Carolina resorts – including Sugar and Cataloochee – may see a snowmaking window on Monday night which would be great to refresh the open slopes.

However, the end of the week and the first part of next week looks really promising (#ThinkCold).

That does it for today, but until next time #ThinkSnow!
