As the title of this post says, it is Sunday, November 17th (happy birthday to my sister) and I am proud to report there are (4) ski resorts open for the business of skiing and snowboarding today.

Let’s get right to those and then I’ll share a bunch more.

Appalachian Ski Mountain – 8 slopes, 3 lifts and a dozen or so features setup on Apple Jack and Apple Jam (their terrain park runs)

Bryce Resort – 2 slopes (Bunny Slope & Bootlegger) open for Sunday.

Cataloochee Ski Area – Today we offer one session only: Day skiing only from 8:30am-4:30pm. With a morning or afternoon half day rate also available. Please note we are on regular early season operating schedule of 8:30am – 4:30pm, Saturday and Sunday and 9am – 4:30pm Monday through Friday.

As I updated the SNOW REPORT this morning there were FIVE ski areas making snow. Those were Canaan Valley Resort, Massanutten Resort, Snowshoe Mountain, Winterplace Resort and Wisp Resort.

I have posted the temperatures from across ALL (16) of the mountaintops as of 8am this morning:

Appalachian Ski Mtn – 35°
Beech Mountain – 43°
Bryce – 29°
Canaan Valley 25°
Cataloochee Ski Area – 34°
Massanutten Resort – 29°
Ober Gatlinburg – 35°
Sapphire Valley – 40°

Sugar Mountain – 38°
The Omni Homestead – 29°

Wolf Ridge – 38°

There were some temperature inversions happening mostly in the North Carolina High Country were I saw 35° at App and 43° at Beech. An hour or so later Beech was down to 37°.

VIEWER NUMBERS WILL BE BONKERS THIS SEASON….

While we only have 4 ski areas operating on this mid-November Sunday – our viewership numbers are reflecting traffic more like what we’d expect for mid-January and February and with a heavy snowfall!

My first Video Snow Report shot on Saturday morning garnered 10,590 views on Facebook alone and more than 17,500 total – including SkiSoutheast.com. (And as I am typing up this Sunday report, those video views have soared by another 3,000!)

As I looked at our viewer numbers over the last 24 hours, it is more like mid-season. Including those Facebook numbers, we also saw 163,500 camera views/sessions to ResortCams on Saturday.

That’s quite a mid-November day with more than 20,000 dedicated visitors to our ski content and more than 183,000 overall via SkiSoutheast.com, ResortCams.com and our Facebook content as well.

Snowmaking Happening North of North Carolina

Massanutten Resort – making snow at 29° this morning.

Just Colder in West Virginia and Maryland

Snowshoe Mountain is creating some MASSIVE whales all over their mountain at 20-23° this morning. The top of the mountain camera at Shavers is impressive, but they have mountains of snow over at Silver Creek and down at the Boathouse…and every where in between. Next week’s opening will be impressive for their Friday, November 22nd rope drop.

Canaan Valley is at 25° and making more snow towards their opening in December.

Wisp Resort is showing 22° and they are cranking out the snow.

Announced Openings Include:

Beech Mountain Resort – November 23rd
Snowshoe Mountain Resort – November 22nd
Massanutten Resort – November 23rd
Canaan Valley Resort – December 13th
Ober Gatlinburg – Opens for Tubing November 23rd
Sapphire Valley – Target date of December 14th

All of the rest are To Be Announced, which means that they will open as soon as they can and weather permitting. Those are:

Wintergreen Resort
Winterplace Resort
Wisp Resort
