It is ALWAYS a race to see which ski area in the Southeast, mid-Atlantic OR AT LEAST within the state of North Carolina will be the first ski resort to open each season.

I was up on top of a VERY cold Beech Mountain at noon on Sunday and it was still flurrying a bit and Beech had the snowguns blazing. I drove down to Sugar Mountain Resort and shot this video at about 1:30pm and honestly Sugar COULD have opened the mountain as there WAS enough base already made to  do it.

However, we’re betting that Sugar Mountain Resort will flip the switch to start turning their 6-main lift just prior to 9am on Monday morning to officially start their season off.

Another side bet? Cataloochee Ski Area will choose to open at 8:30am (their normal start time) on Monday morning, November 14th to officially open the 2022-2023 Ski & Snowboarding season for the Southeast and mid-Atlantic.

The photo at the top of this post is compliments of Cataloochee Ski Area and features the guys on the hill, making all that snow!
