Sugar Mountain is the lone operating ski resort right now as Cataloochee is in preseason mode of only operating on the weekends. Sugar has a reported base of 6-20" and two trails open.

We received a few emails asking us how "Switchback" was in terms of conditions. Sugar has not yet opened Switchback. They ARE open to the 3/4 station and to the skier’s left. That is the traditional first slopes to open for Sugar and then they work their magic elsewhere to open additional terrain as quickly as possible.

The official word from professional snow monitors via CocoRahs is that Cataloochee Ski Area picked up 3.7" of snow from this past weekend’s burst of snow.

We haven’t heard from Gil Adams who is usually the CocoRaHs guy at at Beech Mountain but we did receive another report up there of 5.5" of snow.

Some portions of the Smokies over towards Ober Gatlinburg saw as much as 6-7" of snow this weekend. Ober has not started their snowmaking ops yet as they are waiting for prolonged cold temps.

Cataloochee Ski Area officially was the first ski area to open in the Southeast and Mid Atlantic on Saturday at 8:30am. However as they usually do for the first few weeks, they will not be operating during the week days and they plan to reopen on Saturday at 8:30am.

(They are reporting 42.9° this morning and we’re showing a 37.6° reading. We’re not sure where they’re getting their temp from.)

We’ll be posting a lot of WHAT’S NEW content for the ski resorts this week. However we HAVE been getting a lot of questions pertaining to the opening dates for the rest of the ski areas and here’s the latest that we can tell you.
