Winter is nipping at our noses this morning.

It is quite chilly across the region – anywhere from lower teens at Snowshoe and across the North Carolina mountains to the upper twenties in Virginia.

As a result, every resort in our coverage area has snowmaking ongoing this morning as we get ready to head into the holiday period.

To add a little more ambiance, a few locales received some additional snow throughout the day yesterday and overnight.
Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain received another two inches from yesterday morning to raise their storm total to 4″, while Cataloochee and Snowshoe are also reporting two inches of fresh snow this morning.

Canaan Valley and Timberline saw just under an inch of snow, while Ober Gatlinburg, Wisp Resort, Wintergreen, and Wolf Ridge saw a fresh trace of snow in the past 24 hours.

The biggest news of the morning, however, is the snowmaking as it is the first time this season we have all of the resorts making snow at one time. The cameras at Resort Cams are full of manmade blizzards today, which will help drive those bases up.

There will be a bit of a warm-up after today that will make snowmaking iffy, but cold weather will return early next week.

We are holding steady this morning with six open resorts for play. Those are:

Appalachian Ski Mountain – Playing on eight trails serviced by five lifts. They are reporting a groomed surface on a 24-36″ base with night skiing and terrain park available.

Beech Mountain – Beech is playing on a 20-34″ base with groomed conditions. They are playing on five slopes with three lifts in operation. Ice Skating is set to open on Friday, and they hope to have tubing open next week.

Cataloochee – Cat is open to the top with eight trails and three lifts open today. They are playing on a 25-37″ base with a machine worked/packed powder surface.

Ober Gatlinburg – The lone Tennessee ski resort has had a strong start to the season as they are reporting an 18-28″ base with groomed conditions. They are offering five slopes and have three lifts in operation. They are open from noon-7p for early season hours.

Paul Anderson sent this picture of his wife Julia and son Max on Snowshoe’s Powder Monkey lift Sunday.

Snowshoe – The crew at 4848′ has seen nearly a foot of snow since last Sunday as they are reporting a 45″ base across the mountain with groomed conditions. They have 15 trails and three lifts in operation – Powderridge will also join the fray today on a delayed open.

Sugar Mountain – Sugar is reporting a 25-60″ base with manmade and frozen granular conditions. They are playing on eight trails with four lifts spinning. There is a frostbite warning in effect so hats and gloves are required.

That does it for today, but until next time, #ThinkSnow!
