Good Morning, folks! It’s Wednesday and the big news of today is Canaan and Timberline got another 6.6 inches of snow in the last 24 hours. Nope, I am NOT KIDDING!! Thanks to David Lesher’s Davis, WV weather for providing this great information. Not only did they get over 6 inches of new snow it’s also COLD. The West Virginia ski areas ALL got additional snow and their temperatures this morning are barely out of the single digits! Canaan and Timberline checked in at 3° this morning, Snowshoe was 2° and Winterplace was the warmest WV ski area at 12° — that’s hardly warm!

The next winter storm headed for the southeast and mid-Atlantic may not even make it as far as the mid-Atlantic and may stay south of the Virginia’s. The National Weather service forecast show a slight chance of snow flurries in the Snowshoe area but the other West Virginia ski areas and those in Virginia aren’t looking at any additional snow again until Friday when there’s a chance of snow on the tail end of this next storm. This storm will creep into the western North Carolina mountains tonight and into tomorrow. The AccuWeather.com forecast shows about 1-3 inches for the North Carolina ski areas. Ray predicts even a little less with 1-2 inches for most of mountain region. We’ll take it!

Who needs natural snow when there’s snowmaking to be done? Of the 16 ski areas we cover that actually MAKE snow (Liberty doesn’t since they use that snowflex stuff) 11 made snow through the overnight, so it’s clear that all the ski areas are taking advantage of this week’s cold temperatures!! This is awesome for them and even better for skiers and snowboarders. The snow conditions across the board are AWESOME and this is the IDEAL time to get out there and ride. There will be little to no lift lines through the midweek and it’s way less expensive during the week as well. This week you’re probably looking at the BEST conditions we’ve seen in a while when it comes to sheer snow quality. Ski areas are reporting a mixed bag of GROOMED and PACKED POWDER conditions – it just doesn’t get much better than that in February. If you’re hesitating about getting out there to make some turns, DON’T.

This is the IDEAL TIME TO GET OUT THERE AND SKI OR RIDE!!

GIVE BLOOD!!! Severe winter weather nationwide has drastically affected the nation’s blood supply! The American Red Cross reported that at the end of January blood levels for this time of year were at a 10 year low! The endless snowstorms have cancelled more than 750 blood drives since January 1st, alone!! As a result of these cancellations the American Red Cross is at a shortage of 28,000 blood at platelet donations and the Red Cross is appealing to all capable donors to sign up at a local blood drive!! According to the organization 41,000 blood donations are needed each day and one pint of blood can save up to three lives!! All types of blood are needed but there’s an urgency for the rarest blood types like O-Negative, A-Negative, and B-Negative.

I have been a blood donor since I was eligible in high school, and I had no idea that the country was in such short supply of this life sustaining liquid. If you’re healthy and able to donate, I’d like to urge you to find a blood drive and donate. It takes up very little of your time and can save more lives than you would even imagine. With the warmer weather we have approaching there should be nothing standing in your way of getting out there and giving. A pint of blood could mean the difference between life and death!! It’s easy, people!

Let’s have a look around…

Canaan Valley – 3°- Canaan is open on 38 of 39 slopes and trails with 6.6 inches of new snow. Snowshoe – 2°- Snowshoe is open on 58 of 60 slopes and trails today with 2 inches of fresh snow. Nobody puts it better than Laura Parquette so here’s what she has to say today – "Another 2" of snow fell throughout the day yesterday and there will be some fabulous packed powder conditions across the mountain this morning. We have left the second steep of Lower Shay’s Revenge ungroomed overnight and we’ll allow bumps to form in that area over the next several days, or as long as conditions allow. Everything else was groomed overnight and we should have some great carvable snow this morning. Today promises to be much calmer than yesterday in terms of wind, and we may even see some afternoon sunshine. The sun will definitely return beginning tomorrow and it should be a phenomenal weekend on the mountain with lots of sun and comfortable temperatures reaching as high as 40 degrees on Sunday. Coupled with overnight temperatures below freezing, that should make for some terrific conditions. Just make sure you pack the sun block!

Spruce Glades will be closed once again today while we finish our build in that area. The large park will open tomorrow with new features. Our remaining 4 terrain park areas are open today. Don’t forget, every Friday and Saturday at 11am we’re offering a new terrain park introductory session called "Ride Thru with the Park Crew". Our expert park staff will teach you the Smart Style approach to freestyle terrain, including proper terrain park technique and the safest way to approach new terrain. This is not a freestyle lesson, but it’s a MUST for anyone considering entering the terrain parks for the first time, or looking to elevate their freestyle skills."

Timberline – 3°- Open today on 38 of 39 slopes and trails with 6.6 inches of new snow. Conditions at Timberline are awesome and will be all week long! They are hosting an Ultra Cross event on Saturday and the snow will be awesome for it!!

Winterplace – 12°- Open today on 25 of 27 slopes and trails. Conditions are awesome as Winterplace got an inch of new snow! The tubing park will be closed today in order to bomb the tubing hill with snow and that is set to reopen on Thursday!!

WISP RESORT – 11°- Another inch of snow at Wisp this morning brings the season’s total so far to 136 inches!! Wisp is back operating at 100% today on all 32 slopes and trails! It’s Wednesday at Wisp so that means it’s Bud Light Concert Series night and this evening Wisp welcomes the Steve Hussey Band!

OBER GATLINBURG – 24°- The warmest ski area this morning and they are 100% open today and making snow!! Conditions after a couple days of consecutive snowmaking are awesome! It’s a great day to head to Ober!!

That’s it for today folks…hopefully tomorrow morning we’ll have some more snow on the ground!!!
