Possibly Some Snowmaking Tonight!

02.22.11 08:33 AM

Well, it’s back to the grind today folks! Hopefully everyone had a good holiday weekend and was able to get at least one day on the slopes. The weekend saw some weird weather as there was some rain, sun, clouds, and strong winds all mixed in there. Most of the resorts saw a few inches lost from their base. Holiday crowds combined with a little bit of rain and mild weather will do that. No worries though as all of the resorts are still going strong with impressive base depths. Wisp, Canaan, and Timberline even saw an inch or two of snow in the past 24 hours.

<<<App is still looking to be in great shape this morning.  The same can be said for all the region's ski areas.

It looks like tonight temperatures will get cold enough at most of the resorts that snowmaking ops will resume. I’m sure the usual suspects (Sugar, Cat, Wintergreen, Snowshoe) will fire the guns up and lay down some nice manmade, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a few others did as well. Friday and Saturday nights look like the next opportunities to make some snow. In between now and then, it looks like some rain will move into the region, but as I said already base depths are still looking good everywhere so no worries. After all, it is almost March and roller coaster weather like this is the norm for the Southeast at this time of year. Brad Panovich has sent us his latest skier forecast and we'll post that sometime today.

As many of you have noticed, the SkiNC site as well as the messageboard has been down over the past day or so. There was some kind of attack on the server and Mike has been working on that issue. It’s funny how I got multiple texts and a message on the SkiSE Facebook page yesterday asking about the site being down. We really do have some hardcore fans and I’m glad to know that I’m not the only person who is constantly on the board looking at stuff. Both are now back up and running so all of you messageboard addicts can get your fix in while at work today! Seeing as it was down for the past day or so, I’ll give the trip report contest one more day in case people post some pictures from this past weekend. I’ll let you guys know who is the winner tomorrow morning.

Finally, I just wanted to remind you guys about the Snowshoe Summit coming up next weekend. It’s almost here! I’m pretty pumped for it and this will only be my second visit to the Shoe. If you haven’t already made reservations, you should do so immediately as Snowshoe is giving us SkiSoutheast members an incredible deal. Free Sunday lift tickets and 25% off lodging, yes please! Click here for some more info and I’ll have some more details about it here soon.

That’s about all for today, here’s a look at the ski areas…

Ober Gatlinburg - 43° - Open on 8 of 9 trails today with a groomed surface. The day session begins today at noon and they will be skiing and riding until 10 pm tonight. Tubing and skating are also open today.

Wisp Resort - 19°- Open on 29 of 32 trails today and they are reporting 2 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours! They are now at 141 inches for the season. Today is Student Day, bring your 2010/2011 valid student ID and receive several discounted options on lift tickets, rentals, tubing, and ice skating.

Snowshoe Mountain - 25°- They are open on 59 of 60 trails today, with Sawmill Glades being the only area not open. Here’s what they have to say - "Today is going to be one of those days you wish you could just wish away; like a rainy day at the beach. We had rain throughout most of the day yesterday and then some frozen drizzle overnight. This morning we may see more frozen rain or possibly some snow showers. That freezing precipitation will cause for parking lots and sidewalks to be rather slick this morning, so please use caution. The slopes will also have a frozen crust on top. With temperatures expected to stay below freezing throughout the day, there won't be much softening occurring.

BUT, there is GOOD news. Overnight temperatures will plunge to the teens and we may make snow overnight if conditions are ideal. That new snow will be groomed into our existing base, softening up that snow and creating a nice carvable surface for tomorrow morning. And we'll be able to enjoy those snow conditions under mostly sunny skies tomorrow. Last night our grooming team did get out and give some TLC to the majority of terrain. Shay's Revenge, top to bottom, Sawmill and Camp 99 were all left ungroomed. With some variable conditions it will be more important than ever that skiers and riders hitting the snow ski within their ability. Please read the skier responsibility code for more info!

We still have plenty of snow to enjoy; we're still skiing and riding on 98% of our 244 skiable acres with only Sawmill Glades closed. And with cold overnight conditions providing time for our grooming team to get out and push everything around, and possibly some snowmaking, we'll be back in good shape in no time! Our base depths are still deep across the mountain, and our strategic snowmaking plan means if necessary, we're able to push snow to any spots that might be getting just a little thin. So snow conditions will remain in good shape for WEEKS TO COME! So if you have a trip planned, or are thinking about joining us in March, don't change your plans! Days like this are annoying, but they don't ruin a season! Long term forecasts are calling for a return to more seasonable temperatures in March. That may allow us to make some additional snow, and it will keep our grooming team active and help preserve our snow through the end of March. We have some great upcoming events and lots of great value season deals, so call 877-441-4386 to plan your next escape to Snow Country!"

Canaan Resort - 22°- Open today on 37 of 39 slopes with a groomed surface. They have received an inch of new snow in the past 24 hours. Cross country and snowshoeing are closed today, but tubing and ice skating are open.

Timberline - 22°- They haven’t updated their site this morning but I’m assuming they are open on 37 of 39 trails today as they were yesterday. I’m also guessing that like Canaan they also received an inch of new snow in the past 24 hours. This weekend is Winter Celtic Music Weekend, featuring celebrations with Celtic music on Friday and Saturday as well as other late night entertainment, dancing, and interactive karaoke. Best of all, there is no cover charge for any of the performances!

Winterplace - 32°- Open today on 100% of the mountain with a groomed surface. Both of their terrain parks remain open and tubing is also open today.

Bryce Resort - 24°- Open today on 100% of the mountain with a groomed surface. Not sure if they will have night skiing tonight seeing as they haven’t updated their site yet, but they will have tubing today.

Massanutten - 20°- Open today on 100% of the mountain with loose granular conditions. Both terrain parks are open with a number of features set up. Tubing is also open today from 9am to 9pm and they have a special today where anyone can tube for just $10.

Wintergreen - 18° - Open today on 25 of 26 trails with a groomed surface. They will have night skiing tonight, and tubing will open at 2pm today. They do plan on making snow today and tonight!

Appalachian Ski Mountain - 42°- Open today on all 12 slopes with a groomed surface. Look for them to possibly make some snow tonight if the temperatures get cold enough, but if they don’t they still have plenty of snow as they are sporting a five to eight foot base. Ice skating is also open today.

Beech Mountain Resort - 34°- Open today on 100% of the mountain with a groomed surface. The terrain park is open with a multitude of fun features and was rebuilt over the weekend. Ice skating is also open today.

Cataloochee – 42.4°- They are open on 100% of the mountain with a groomed surface today. Tubing will be open this week. Look for Cat to make snow tonight if temps allow! Also, just a reminder that it's Learn to Ski and Snowboard Season at Cataloochee and with the purchase of rentals you get a free 1.5 hour beginner lesson!

Sapphire Valley - 44°- Open today on 100% of the mountain. Tubing is also open and they will have night skiing tonight.

Sugar Mountain – 40°- Open today on 100% of the mountain with a perfectly groomed surface. Sugar is another area where I wouldn’t be surprised to see some snowmaking tonight as temperatures should be cold enough. Skating and tubing are also open. This Thursday they will be having their Spyder Sample Sale where there will be huge savings on select Spyder winter items.

Wolf Ridge - 40° - Open on 14 of 23 slopes today with a groomed surface. Here’s what they have to say – “It’s TUESDAY, 40 degrees on the mountain and the weather man is calling for cloudy skies today. We will have 13 runs and 2 lifts open today and are offering the following SPECIALS: Homeschool: $29.00 lift/ski/lesson: Plus buy one lift ticket and get the second free: (night ski only)The Slopes will open today from 9.00am to 10.00pm so get here early and be the first to Shred the snow.
