Just to get things started off this balmy Thursday morning (it’s a toasty 9° here at the office), I thought I’d tell you a HILARIOUS story. A couple of days ago some of our staff members decided it was perfect conditions to get some snow time in. One of our dudes isn’t from around these parts and has really only had shredding experience out west. Well as the story goes, our guy was riding the lift at one of our are ski resorts. He reached the top, off-loaded, and seemed to be a little confused. He immediately found a lift op dudes and asked “when are you going to open up the rest of the mountain.” Naturally, the whole office was laughing hysterically…as we all know our mountains may be amazing and have killer conditions, but they don’t have the most vertical.

All eyes are trained on the upcoming weekend’s predicted WINTER STORM. Milder temps are approaching for today through the first half of the weekend…but this is just a quickie. Cold temps and moisture will swoop back in on Sunday, and ladies and gents, chances of another blast of snow and winter weather are poised for attack! I say bring it on…the more, the merrier!

Add WISP to the tally…they’re open today, just a couple days ahead of the originally scheduled opening day. TIMBERLINE opens too! Seems like we’re only days away from all the areas being open for the year!

Wisp – 15°– OPENING DAY! Wisp Resort is open today for your skiing and snowboarding pleasure with 14 trails and 4 lifts. Wisp is also open today for tubing and ice skating!

Here’s what the guys and gays up at Wisp have to say…
We’re bustin’ into the Winter 2010/2011 Season at Wisp Resort! Coming off last year’s record-breaking snowfall season in Deep Creek Lake, snow sport enthusiasts are hoping for a repeat performance from Mother Nature & Old Man Winter this season. This winter Wisp has invested more into their snowmaking and snowgrooming operations to bring you the best snow product in the Mid-Atlantic region. Two new Prinoth snowgroomers will join the Groomer Fleet to finely comb our 32 trails on 110 acres. The 12 chair and surface lift system will escort you to the mountaintop where 700 vertical feet will await!

No new snow to report at any of the Virginia ski areas today. Most of the ski areas in our neighbor to the north plan to drop the ropes this weekend and are absolutely blasting when temperatures allow…there’s been loads of snowmaking over the past couple of weeks, especially over the last few days during these CHILLY temps.

QUICK REMINDER…Canaan and Winterplace get things fired up Saturday!

Snowshoe Mountain– 6° — Snowshoe dropped ‘em (the ropes) yesterday and opened with STELLAR conditions. Today they are open with 17 trails today… Snowshoe continues to limit snowmaking to only closed terrain and…major developments up on the mountain…

Laura Parquette writes “We continue to be aggressive with snowmaking and have moved into the South Mountain area, serviced by the Soaring Eagle lift, and (drum roll, please) we have begun snowmaking at the top of the Western Territory. Following a brief warm-up to end the week, we should make the big move over to Cupp and Shays and have that area ready for expert skiers and riders shortly.” Very cool, ‘nuff said.

Timberline – 24°– OPENING DAY! Timberline opens today with 4 of 36 trails open and plans to open up even more terrain on Friday. Timberline received loads of snow from the last storm and has received over 30 inches on the season!

Appalachian Ski Mountain – 12°– No new snow, but continuing to blast snowmaking ops at night – operating 8 of 12 trails and 5 lifts. Slightly warmer temperatures in the region will make for some amazing conditions.

Cataloochee – 15°– No new snow reported but snowmaking continues – Skiing and snowboarding on 11 of 16 trails with 3 lifts. Look for tubing this Saturday!

Beech Mountain – 11° — New Terrain! 7 new trails open today, bringing the grand total to 12 of 14 . Beech Mountain Ski Resort will kick of night skiing for the year this Saturday, December 11.

Sugar Mountain – 14°– Sugar Mountain is running with 14 of 20 trails and is open to the top for day and night skiing! No new snow but snowmaking ops are still raging. Sugar Fest this weekend!

Wolf Ridge – 17°- Back open today with 8 of 23 trails open for your enjoyment. Wolf nabbed 16 inches of snow off the last storm and has been snowmaking for 6 days solid so conditions should be pretty sweet.
