West Virginia, mountain mama, take me home, to the snow.

Almost Heaven started of 2024 with a bang. Snowshoe, Canaan Valley Resort, and Timberline have all been hit with fresh snow.

Let’s get into it:

Snowshoe

Ropes are dropping at Western Territory.

Snowmakers have been working hard to open up that side of the mountain. That will happen by this afternoon. And with 2 inches of fresh snow, there’s no better time for it to happen.

Here’s what the snow reporting team has to say:

Cupp Run will open by the afternoon. Our patrollers will be spending the morning getting it prepped and ready for shreddin’. Snowmaking will be in progress on Cupp as well as several other open trails today. Please ski/ride under control at all times and follow all safety signage. The forecast is looking incredible for the first week of 2024, with plenty of cold and snow on the way! It’s snowing hard as we speak and more accumulation is expected throughout the day.”

Timberline

There is nearly three inches of fresh snow at Timberline. Here’s what that team has to say this morning:

We’re starting the new year off with 2 to 3 inches of natural snowfall this morning. Another inch of accumulation is expected over the course of the day. All open terrain has been machine groomed, with the exception of Twister and Upper Thunderstruck. Groomed terrain has a slightly sugary, packed powder surface, and ungroomed terrain will have fresh powder.

Canaan Valley Resort

Another three inches of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours, and more is on the way.

Chute, Valley Vista, and Face are among the 10 trails open today.

Beech

Discord user J.Overcash was at Beech yesterday, and reported great snow, bluebird conditions, and low crowds.

Visibility is pretty low there today though.

There are 11 trails open and five lifts spinning.

Cataloochee

Long Jawn Silver was at Cataloochee yesterday. Here’s what they had to say:

Stopped through Cat on my drive from Knoxville back to Charlotte today, absolutely outstanding out. First day open for Alley Cat which had full coverage but was quite fast and icy at the drop in. All-in-all, the rest of the mountain’s conditions were about perfect, soft and very playful. Crowds built up in the beginner areas but I lapped the summit through the height of the day with never more than a 2/3 min wait. 11 laps in 3 hours, definitely better than expected for NYE day. Shouldn’t be long at all until 100% of their terrain is open, provided their water reserves last for the guns.”

Resolutions

I asked everyone what their skiing related New Year’s resolutions yesterday. Here are some of your answers:

DaBluBarron1918:

  • “Talk Gunther into adding a Terrain park (at Sugar).”

mtns2sea:

  • “Force myself to practice riding switch.”
  • “More time with the boys on the mountain.”

Long Jawn Silver:

  • “Mine’s simple: get as many days as possible in.”

Reminder: Don’t make any plans for February 9 through 11.
