We’ve got fresh snow again.

Canaan Valley Resort, Snowshoe and Timberline all picked up an inch of fresh snowfall overnight. Meanwhile, temperatures across the region have dipped into the 20s – and even the teens in some parts – giving snowmakers a perfect window to fire up the snow guns and add to that base.

Resolutions

A few days ago, I asked you all what your New Year’s resolutions were when it comes to skiing and snowboarding. I have a few myself. Here they are:

Ride at 10 Different Ski Areas in 10 Different States

This is a big one for me every single year. There is something special about being a regular at the same mountain weekend after weekend, but nothing quite beats the exploring you can do in a single season.

This season is especially unique for me, because it’s the first year I’ve really committed to hitting all of the ski areas in the southeast. My goal is to ride at one mountain in each state of our coverage area.

A bluebird day at Snowbird in 2023.

Last year, I hit 15 different ski areas in six different states: North Carolina, New Hampshire, Utah, Vermont, Colorado, and Montana. So far this year, I have five ski areas in two different states under my belt. Time to get traveling!

50 Days on Snow

This is my goal every single season, and I have only even come close to it once.

A lot of things have to be going right to accomplish this goal. I’ll have to stay healthy, work will have to be going smoothly, and weather has to cooperate. I’ll keep everyone in the loop.

Splitboard With Ollie More

Ollie is my dog, a 1-year-old rescue. I brought him splitboarding with me at Pats Peak in New Hampshire before Christmas. He had a blast. I want to make sure I share more days on the mountain with him.

Watch More Ski and Snowboard Films

I’ve always been jealous of those who can recall specific video parts – and the tricks and athletes – from a Teton Gravity Research or Matchstick Productions film. That comes from repetition.

Send your recommendations my way. Ride Snowboard’s Rated R is up next for me.

Ski

I usually find myself on two planks at least once a year. Time to get back to it!

Keep My Boards Waxed

I’m as guilty as anyone else for letting this get away from me, but keep your bases waxed! Your skiing and riding will thank you.

Let’s get into what you need to know around the southeast today:

Beech

Lowlight lenses and safety glasses are required today if you plan on hitting Beech. The ResortCam is looking foggier than your brain after a three-day holiday weekend. Discord user J.Overcash was there yesterday, and said the flat light led him to tap out after just two runs.

Cataloochee

Great news: Upper Snowbird is scheduled to open tomorrow.

As for today, there are 11 of 18 trails open, and five lifts spinning. Upper Omigosh, Alley Cat, and Rock Island Run are all open today.

Snowshoe

Cupp Run is open. Snowshoe got another inch of snow last night, and the cold temperatures should help it stick around for a little while.

The resort teamed up with Darn Tough and Dakine for a New Year, New Gear slope side scavenger hunt. Want some clues as to where the swag bags might be? Download the Snowshoe Mountain App.

There are 30 open trails, two terrain parks and six of 12 night trails open.

Timberline

With four inches of snow in the last week and 17 trails open, Timberline is having itself a heck of a start to 2024.

Here’s what the team had to say today:

Snowmaking began yesterday afternoon and continued overnight on both open and un opened terrain. This new snowmaking has been groomed in with another inch of natural snow, creating a light and fluffy machine groomed surface. Snowmaking will continue on select terrain today.

Massanutten

Temperatures will touch 40 today, but the snowmaking team is using this window as an opportunity to run the snow guns. That means goggles are a must out on the hill.

Massanutten kicks off its first ever HeArt and SOUL Winter Fest Thursday. That will run through January 8, and feature a wine tasting event, group yoga and hiking, a snow tubing party, and more.

Appalachian Ski Mountain

The social media team at App truly does an amazing job. They posted this drone footage from New Year’s Eve yesterday.

One programming note at App: Appaljack is the only terrain park open today.

Reminder: Don’t make any plans for February 9 through 11.

For the first time since 2020, we are hosting a SkiSoutheast Resort Summit. This one will be at Massanutten Resort. The weekend is an opportunity to meet up with like-minded snow sports lovers from all over the southeast.
