Perhaps the biggest news of the day is how varied the temperatures are across the Southeast and Mid Atlantic’s ski areas. That is probably also the "story of the season" becuase we have mentioned it so many times. Typically temps at the various high elevations across the 17 ski areas within our coverage area are not that different. However this season that has just not been the case.

The numerous arctic systems have been on a pattern this season that simply does not push down as far as they normally have done in past years. That was forecasted by Brad Panovich back in September and that has been the case to this point in the season.

As an example of what the heck I’m talking about – check out the 3° temperature this morning at Snowshoe Mountain whereas Wolf Ridge Resort in Western North Carolina is reporting 31°. Ski Beech which is at a higher elevation that Snowshoe (5,506′ compareed to 4,848′) is at 26° this morning. That is a huge swing.

What ISN’T unusual is for the upper tier of Southeast and Mid Atlantic resorts to see more natural snow and that continues to be the case. Snowshoe picked up another 6" of snow and several of the West Virginia and Maryland resorts saw 3"-4" of new snow and more is on the way.
