Yesterday evening we wrote about the roller coaster-like changes that you can see in conditions at the ski areas of the Southeast at this time in March. Well we’re back on the good side of the ride again for a while at least today.

Mild temps into the mid and upper 40s are forecasted for the Virginia ski areas, so the best surface will be early there.  The West Virginia and Maryland resorts are smiling this morning as COLD hit last night and even though it will be a bit breezy today, it will also be COLD.  Snowshoe Mountain isn’t expecting the temps to reach 30 degrees today.  That made for GREAT snowmaking last night and with that and grooming overnight, Snowshoe will be in sweet condition on Saturday!!!

Andrea Smith of Snowshoe Mountain ’s Communication Department says, “Today’s blue skies and temperatures in the lower 30’s should make a blue bird day for skiing and riding. This season’s natural snowfall along with recent snowmaking and grooming should keep conditions nice until next week’s anticipated natural snowfall. All open trails were groomed overnight except for Knot Bumper and Choker. Be sure and check out the Snowshoe 24 on Cascade, Slaymaker/Spur and Mountaineer trials at Silver Creek. Also, start making your plans to join us next weekend for our annual Mountaintop Beach Party Music Festival. Enjoy fun and games on the slopes, live entertainment, fireworks and more.”

Snowshoe 24 starts at NOON Saturday and should be a lot of fun.  We’ll get you some photos!

The Virginia resorts are offering Spring conditions today and that means that there is plenty of snow on the slopes that are open, but there are thin coverage and bare spots as well.  Massanutten is skiing on 7 trails today and will close on Sunday for the season so get over there and enjoy that last days of the season!  Wintergreen hopes to get to making some snow tonight and make it to the next two weekends.  That will be a fight, but they have an amazing snowmaking system that will help them accomplish that if Mother Nature cooperates at all.  They have 15 trails open today.

Wisp Resort is hosting their CARDBOARD BOX DERBY today and that should be loads of fun and with 20 trails open today Wisp will be a popular place to be!
