Sunday Southeast Update –

Saturday WAS a GREAT day for memory-making! Anyone who hit the slopes on Saturday will be talking about how great the conditions were for some time to come. We received several emails from people exclaiming how wonderful the packed powder conditions were all around the Southeast. All of the ski areas received a good bit of snowfall from the Thursday snowstorm, and they made snow through Friday night and early Saturday morning as well. That made for a "chamber of commerce" kind of day everywhere and there were certainly a lot of "Kodak moments" to be had. (Speaking of Kodak moments…send me yours at: [email protected] and we’ll make you famous by putting your photos of the front of SkiNC.com and SkiSoutheast.com!)

…and then the roller coaster goes d-o-w-n-h-i-l-l – It has been an up and down winter thus far and during the next few days we will see some moderate-to-heavy rain in portions of the region as milder temps re-invade the area again. If you’re going to do some skiing or riding…get it in during the first half of Sunday because rain will make it into the area around lunchtime according to meteorologist, Brad Panovich and although it will be the light variety…it will get wet. Monday will be more of the same and then this brief bout with "underdeveloped snow" (rain for those of you who are new to the website) will clear on out and cold air and some snow is in the forecast for mid-week and the cold should last through next weekend.

Snowmaking crews will rest a bit until probably Wednesday night and then they will do their magic for a GREAT weekend of skiing next weekend.

So get out and enjoy great conditions before the rain comes in…and then stay dry and enjoy some local dining and shopping.

Snowmobile Tours – We get a fair amount of emails asking us about Snowmobile tours and most everytime we will recommend Snowshoe Resort, because they DO have a phenomenal program for outdoor adventure. However, you guys may also want to give Homestead a try. The Virginia resort offers Snowmobile tours as well as expanded ski and riding terrain. We received a great email from a longtime member up there and they informed us that The Homestead performed trail widening on most of their trails for this season. They also added new rails in the Playland Terrain Park and increased their capacity in the tubing park. The Homestead is open for skiing, boarding and snowmobiling from 9am – 5pm daily. They also offer an Olympic-size skating rink which is also open daily from 9am – 5pm.

Snowshoe is still bragging! – …and rightfully so. What a great weekend to be at Snowshoe Mountain Resort! TEN INCHES of natural snowfall combined with overnight snowmaking operations have the slopes in great shape today. In the past month, their veteran snowmakers have made more than ONE MILLION TONS of snow!

Snowshoe DID want us to mention that the Widowmaker Trail will not be open to the public for most of today due to regional college races taking place on the trail. After 10" of snow this week, the conditions are perfect at Snowshoe Mountain…so get up there and enjoy the day!

See you on the slopes!
