WE ARE SEEING SOME CRAZY TEMPS THIS MORNING!

How about these numbers:

Snowshoe Mountain is showing 24° this morning and they are making some snow as long as temps hold out, but they are expecting the temps to rise into the 50° range. So the snowguns will turn off for a lot of the day skiing hours. The snowmakers will get back to work there Thursday night as temps drop to near 20° and they will have some snowmaking ops Friday night as well. The really cold temps are coming in on Tuesday…but more about that in a minute.

Appalachian Ski Mountain saw a low of 32° in the early hours after midnight, but it is now 46° at 7:30am. Appalachian and most areas around the High Country will see temperatures rebound into the 52° range today.

The WEIRD thing about some of the temps is that at the same time it is 46° at App, we see these other observations:

Banner Elk – 24°

Sugar Mountain – 38° at the bottom and 45° up top! Boys and girls, can you say – i-n-v-e-r-s-i-o-n?

Beech Mountain – 42°

Newland – 25°

Cataloochee – 23° (Kind of surprised not to see any snowguns running this morning. Maybe they are up top. We have to get those guys a better webcam.)

Hawksnest is at 40° this morning.

Wolf Ridge Resort – 27°

THE SKI REPORT IS SHORT… (Check the slope conditions page for details)

Snowshoe Mountain is offering the most terrain in the region with six trails and two lifts.

Appalachian is offering 3 trails and groomed conditions for day skiing only. They have Ice Skating as well.

Sugar Mountain is offering Upper and Lower Flying Mile for day and night skiing. Sugarfest is December 15th and 16th. Happenings include on-snow equipment demo’s, Ski & Snowboard Makeover winners presentation, ice skating grand opening celebration, snowball eating contest, Burton/Edge of the World rail jam, fireworks, ice sculpting and music by Boss Hawg. If you plan to stay overnight, fantastic slopeside and on-mountain lodging specials are available.

Wisp Resort in Maryland is making snow this morning!

UP AND DOWN TEMPERATURES HEADING REALLY COLD!

The big murmur that you may be hearing is the talk this morning that the weather may be really turning colder around Monday of next week. We mentioned it a few days ago and we’ll wait on Brad Panovich to send in his video update tonight to elaborate, but it does appear that the forecast is holding and the colder temps of the season is headed our way!

Wednesday will be nice…but no snowmaking. Thursday should provide some overnight snowmaking as temps drop into AT LEAST the mid 20s across the region. Same thing for Friday night. Saturday looks marginal at best with expected temps to drop to around freezing. There is a little rain and milder temps in store for the North Carolina mountains on Sunday and it is THIS forecast that might be making some ski areas hold off on snowmaking.

MONDAY IS WHEN IT GETS FUN!

After some early morning light rain the temps should fall and turn that precip into snow flurries as temperatures go into the TEENS. Snowmaking will go FULL BORE! Tuesday looks COLD with some snow as highs will be in the 20s and lows in the teens.

So for all of you who have been emailing us asking WHEN all of the resorts will make snow – you’re looking at it. Mark DECEMBER 3rd on your calendar.

…now if only Mother Nature will keep the FRIDGE on for a while!
