Skier’s Forecast for the Southeast and Mid Atlantic Resorts for Dec 7th, 2006

Since more Resorts are Opening for this weekend, let’s detail the weather across the region. First stop:

WISP RESORT – Look for 90% chance of snow today and tonight with 4-8” of snow from today, tonight and Friday! Highs today will be around 24° and the low tonight should be near 11°. Friday look for more snow (maybe another ½”) and highs near 22°. Friday night’s low should be near 10°. It will be breezy with winds gusting in the 20-25 mph range with some isolated higher winds. Saturday and Sunday look pretty with highs 34° on Saturday and 43° on Sunday. Overnight lows will be snowmaking 20s!

TIMBERLINE / CANAAN VALLEY – Look for about the same forecast as WISP with temps about 2° or so milder. These areas could see 4-8” of snow Thursday and Friday as well! Wind chill values are going to be in the MINUS range at times!

SNOWSHOE – How is 100% chance of snow for you guys??? Periods of snow mainly after noon on Thursday with falling temps all day. Look for 8-12” of snow from today through Friday afternoon! Winds will be 15-20 mph with slightly higher gusts through the period. Look for 3-5” of snow today, 4-6” tonight and another 1-3” on Friday. Oh yea, it will be COLD with highs Thursday around what they are this morning and dropping to ZERO tonight. Friday’s high will be near 12° and the low Friday night in the single digits. Saturday and Sunday should be sunny with highs in the 32° range – perfect for DEMO DAYS – and lows around 25°. Sunday a bit milder though still chilly.

WINTERGREEN RESORT IN VIRGINIA – A slight chance of snow after 3pm or so. Look for a dusting to maybe an inch or two of snow depending on how the moisture turns. Highs Friday will be near 40° and lows tonight near 15°. Friday should be sunny with a high near 32° and lows around 14°. Saturday will be sunny and a high around 43° and Saturday night’s low near 22° – perfect for skiing and snowmaking when needed.

OBER GATLINBURG IN TENNESSEE – opens up for skiing this weekend. Expect a snow shower or two there today and tonight with maybe a dusting or so of snow. Highs Thursday around 42° and lows Thursday night around 13°! Friday through the weekend will be sunny with highs Friday 34°, Saturday 43° and Sunday 48°. Overnight lows will be 15° Friday night, 22° Saturday night and 30° Sunday night.

NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS

Thursday will be blustery and COLD. Expect highs to be around freezing with 20mph winds and gusts to 45mph. The lows tonight will be in the single digits! Around 8°-10°. We could see from ½” to 1-2” OF SNOW across some areas.

Friday will be frigid around Banner Elk and Beech Mountain areas with highs in the 20s all day. Beech and Banner Elk could see highs around 24° and a bit warmer to around 32° over towards Cataloochee and Wolf Ridge areas. Friday night lows should be near 12° across most of Western North Carolina! It will still be windy with 10-20 mph winds and some gustier bursts near 40 mph. That will make it the coldest 24 hour period in just about two full years in the region!

Look for Saturday to “mild up” a bit to more normal temps with sunny skies and highs to near 42° and much less wind. Saturday night’s low should be near 15°. Sunday and Monday look pretty with highs in the 40s and lows in the mid 20s. Great ski weather and snowmaking at night.
