The TOP announcement this morning needs to be to inform those of you who were planning on attending the "King of the Hill" Comp at Hawksnest today…that it has been postponed and rescheduled for Sunday, March 9th. According to Justin Grimes up at Hawksnest, "The King of the Hill group visited midday Saturday and decided to reschedule the event to Sunday March 9th. Thanks again for your good support of Hawksnest this season.-Justin"

<Groomers doing their thing early this morning!

Since we’re on Hawksnest – They had a low of 24° overnight but no report of snowmaking overnight. It’s 32° as of 7:30am and Lenny or Duggan is doing some slow grooming which has them looking quite nice this morning. They will have 9 trails with some terrain features scattered all over the mountain. They also have snow tubing open as well. Hawksnest looks quite nice this morning, there was just simply not enough snow to push around for the competition and leave them in good condition otherwise. So the decision was made to move the event to March 9th. Make plans on being there if you can.

Pro Skier, Grete Eliassen inspired me yesterday when she said that she grew bored of doing the same thing every single day. She said that she likes to mix it up a bit. So today I’m going to do the same. I’m going to provide you guys with my morning update in the unorganized way in which I get the data.

Here we go with my unorganized report:

Canaan Valley – 21° – Light snow was being reported at 4am when they sent in their report. They are day skiing only on Sunday on 16 trails. They had 39 trails open for only ONE day. We’ll have to ask them about that move. They should have good conditions today.

Cataloochee – 30° – They say that they made some snow and will have 9 trails open for Sunday day skiing only. Tammy Brown, the sweetheart of a marketing gal at Cat wanted us to share the following. She said, "Don’t forget to join the Cat Crew this afternoon for the Cataloochee Recreational Race Series. $10.00 gets you in and $1.00 of your race entry fee will be donated to KARE the Kids Advocacy Resource Effort of Haywood County, so come on out and race to support a great cause! Individuals race against the clock for the best of two runs. Top three challengers in both men’s and womens’ age divisions win cool stuff. You must be 7 years of age or older to participate. Racing is from 1pm-3pm with awards ceremony at 4pm, so dust off those racing skills and test your luck. The Cat is where it’s at on Sunday afternoon’s Recreational Race Series."

Ober Gatlinburg in Tennessee reported in at 5am this morning with 32° and no snowmaking though. She said that they have pretty good conditions on the 5 open trails for Sunday.

Appalachian Ski Mountain – 26° – Even though they had the temps, they did not make snow overnight. They are 100% open, have done some sweet grooming and offer both terrain parks and ice skating as well.

Snowshoe Mountain – 18° – With those temps Laura Parquette (who always files her reports around 6am) wrote, "Snowmaking did take place overnight and the mountain is beautifully groomed this morning."

Snowshoe has 58 trails open, snow tubing, snowmobiling, both terrain parks and more to do than you can ever get done in a week! They saw a bit of a dusting and more snow looks to be in the forecast. They look like they may get a light drizzle later today that will change over to snow.

<The sun rises on another gorgeous day to be at Wisp. This shot came from one of their MANY live cams!

Wisp Resort in Maryland is showing 15° this morning and Lori Epp is always another early-bird at providing their slope conditions. They have 29 trails open today, snow tubing, terrain parks and their mountain coaster. Although they have the temps, they did not make snow. Conditions are GREAT for today.

Winterplace reported in at 6am with 23° but no snowmaking but great conditions on 28 trails, snow tubing and terrain park fun! They saw a TRACE of new snow and it should be a nice day to be at Winterplace!

Ski Beech – The low this morning was 29° but it’s already 36°. But HERE’S some big news: They are still making snow as of 7:45am. The temp must be a bit colder on the mountain this morning than at the weather station. They look pretty nice on the 10 trails they have open for Sunday. They also offer their terrain park and ice skating. The coverage looks good enough to make it to the REALLY COLDER air that is headed our way for next week!

Gil filed his report at 6:30am and announced that their village shops are knocking 25 to 50 percent off select merchandise, as well as discounted prices on equipment in the ski shop! They will have good conditions for Sunday. Maybe go do some skiing and riding…and buy that coat or set of skis you’ve been putting off!

The Ski Beech newsletter also went out overnight and they shared an old quote by playwright Kin Hubbard that I always thought was pretty cool and it fits our weather of late. Kin said, “Don’t knock the weather. If it didn’t change once in awhile, nine out of 10 people couldn’t start a conversation.”

MY PERSONAL favorite of his was in reference to the old biblical quote that says something like, "…even a fool is thought to be wise when he keeps his mouth shut" which is a reference to being a good listener. Kin’s quote was, "A good listener is usually thinking about something else."

Probably true!

Wintergreen’s Anne Marie Jones and their staff are always posting reports early. They did make snow overnight and will have 22 trails open today. She writes, "Overnight temperatures dipped below freezing allowing snowmaking crews to blanket slopes and trails throughout the resort. Head on up to Wintergreen today and meet 2X Gold and Silver Medalist X Games athlete Grete Elliasen. Grete will be skiing around today and signing autographs throughout the day. Looking to try the latest and greatest from Head skis? Stop by and demo the latest performance ski equipment from Head.

Today’s weather is sunny and clear skies with highs expected in the lower 40’s. Overnight snowmaking has allowed for a fresh blanket of snow throughout the resort. Our current base snow depth ranges from 20-40 inches and skiing and riding conditions are good."

Sugar Mountain saw a low of 26° overnight and did make snow manmade snow. Although they are at 32° right now (8am), they are not making snow. (Bigger news is that Ski Beech still is (I just looked)! Sugar Mountain is reporting Loose & Frozen Granular w/ some Man Made Powder on 19 trails, terrain park, ice skating and snow tubing!

Massanutten Resort – 32° – They posted a report around 7am and therefore they come next. They have 11 trails open, both terrain parks, and several lanes of snow tubing. They report that Upper Dixie Dare and Pacesetter will be closed for a SARA race today from 9am-2pm. They made snow and should be in great shape today.

Bryce Resort did not make snow but they are 100% open with tubing open and terrain park as well.

Wolf Ridge – 31° – Did not make snow but look in good shape today with 14 trails open. Their terrain park is closed and they are reporting wet granular conditions.

Timberline Resort – 14° – They are usually late in posting a report for the day. It’s 8:30am and none has come in as yet. We’ll assume they have the same that they had on Saturday.

Th-Tha-That’s All Folks!

Hey it’s 8:31am and Ski Beech is STILL MAKING SNOW. FYI, they are the only resort in the state of North Carolina making snow as of this moment and that is a trend we all hope to see more of! Way to go Beech!
