North Carolina Ski Resorts Looking Forward to a Cold and Snowy President’s Day Weekend!

Some weird weather anomalies are happening again this morning. It’s a bit colder over in the western part of the state as Cataloochee and Wolf Ridge Resort are both reporting 25° this morning at 7:24am. The low this morning in the High Country was at Appalachian Ski Mountain when around 2-3am is what 25°, but the current temperature is now 34° at 7:30am. It is also 34° atop Beech and Sugar, and its 33° up at Hawksnest.

Today will be almost Spring-like with temps that will rise into the 50s across the region, with the highest elevations staying in the 40s. Ray Russell informs us this morning that this is the second day in the last month that temps have made it into the 50s. IT HAS BEEN FRIGID!

We’re looking at MORE FRIGID temperatures for the mountains of Western North Carolina for Wednesday night through at least next Sunday and snow is in the forecast for Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday! It doesn’t look like anything major, but it will be snow and cold with highs in the 20s and low 30s – and lows in the single digits and teens. So if you have a trip planned for President’s Day Weekend, you are in for some SNOW, COLD and GREAT SKI CONDITIONS!!!

Before we can get to the return of cold and snow, we’ll have to weather a cloudy day today and some decent chances for rain on Tuesday. Honestly, the forecasted rain doesn’t look like a day killer for either day, so if you have plans to enjoy LADIES DAY (Free Skiing at Ski Beech) or plans to attend your favorite ski area, I wouldn’t change those plans. It looks like the best chance of rain will be for Tuesday night anyway.

Conditions will be near perfect no matter where you ski or ride today, because the surface will soften up somewhat from all of the hard freezes of late. Check the SLOPE CONDITIONS page for all of the details.

The only notes worthy of mentioning this morning are that Sapphire Valley is closed for Mondays and Tuesdays; Ski Beech has LADIES SKI FREE DAY today (Day Session Only) and Wolf Ridge is now offering NIGHT SKIIING on their entire mountain, including the new slopes at Breakaway. It is amazing how The Wolf has stepped up their game this season! If you haven’t visited Wolf Ridge in the last year or two, you owe it to yourself to check it out. We also posted a nice video produced by the folks at Wolf Ridge. We had in on the front of the site for a couple of days and if you haven’t seen it, it does a nice job of taking you around the “new” Wolf Resort. CLICK HERE TO SEE IT

We also posted some new video from Ski Beech that is now on the front page that shows Jasen Vioral (AKA Mellow Yellow) carving his way down the slopes of Ski Beech. Looks like he was enjoying Robbins Run last weekend during the SkiNC Summit. Jasen is one of our dedicated message board moderators and one heck of a long boarder!

There’s also a very cool video of the WV Open Comp that was held at Snowshoe Mountain last month that you should check out. CLICK HERE TO SEE IT

NEED LODGING FOR THIS WEEKEND!??!

President’s Day weekend is the last of the long Holiday Weekends during the ski season. Accommodations may be scarce if you haven’t already made plans. We posted a Businesss Spotlight article for Wits End Vacation Rentals, which features a ton of log cabins and cottages for rent within the Blowing Rock and Boone areas. CLICK HERE TO SEE THAT STORY…and make plans to reward yourself with a much deserved getaway today!

Computer-eze for Skiers!

Bill Stedem, who has been a regular on SkiNC for a number of years recently emailed me and at the end of the email he signed it with *<8~) O ==//

I searched numerous sources to see if there was something that I was missing. When my teenaged daughter had no clue I replied back to Bill, asking him what the heck that was. Look it over. Give up?

MARCH TO BE MILD?

Mike Stinneford of Washington, D.C. has been sending us periodic updates about the long term forecast over the last couple of months and he recently sent us one that hinted at a bit of a mild-up as we go into March. Other meteorologists, such as Herb Stevens (the Skiing Weatherman) are holding to the theory that you don’t normally see the kind of frigid temps that we’ve been experience just “turn off”.

Most weather gurus are saying that we will see milder temps than the well-below-normal temps that weve been seeing and March usually holds some of our more snowier days – so we’ll hold on to that hope!

We hinted that we might send out our new hit-crew, the same one that took out Punxsutawney Phil, to pay a visit to Mike. However, before we could even dispatch our crew, Mike wrote, “I sent my last e-mail before I read your report on Phil this morning. I’ve already contacted the witness protection program!”

We’re going to have to be a bit more secretive with our intentions! 😉

Enjoy your day on the slopes!

Until Next Time…
