Stay up to date by getting notified of new posts!

We have a lot to share today and another story will be posting later this morning so you’ll want to check back in a bit. However, first…

Resort Notes Always Come First

Check the slope conditions page for slope numbers and base depths. These notes are for added information.

Wisp Resort in Maryland – These guys have had some favorable snow patterns of late. 2” more natural snow fell in the last 24 hours, giving them close to a foot of snow in the last 48 hours and more snow is on the way. We’ll be heading up there on Thursday or Friday and hope to get you some great photos and video.

Canaan Valley Resort – David Cooper from the recreation department at Canaan Valley has been sending some remarkable photos from up there with all of the snow that they have received! They saw another TRACE of snow in the last 24 hours. The SSAA is incorrectly reporting another 6” today! (What are we going to do with those guys???!!!) Canaan Valley is looking wonderful for skiing or riding today.

Timberline Resort – We have a ton of photos to post for Timberline today as well. Be sure to check those out. Timberline saw another 1” of snow overnight. They also have 100% of their cross country skiing terrain open today with 7” of natural snow on it. They are also hosting a Country Legends Tribute Weekend – this weekend! Pam Long shares, “Enjoy the sounds of West Virginia’s rich musical heritage presented Friday and Saturday 5 pm to 9 pm at the ski lodge. Mr. Scott is the legendary star of the World famous WWV Jamboree and MGM recording star. He will appear with Jan and Laurie of Harmony Scott. This group will perform contemporary and classic renditions of country legends. The celebration will continue at 9 pm with the unique fusion sounds of Macho Willie. There is no cover for any of the performances. Full menu available in the restaurant early until late.”

Snowshoe Mountain – It was 14° this morning and they report, “Three more inches of snow fell last night, taking our natural snowfall total for the season up to 36" – and 24" have been in January alone. All the trails were groomed overnight laying a nice groomed, packed powder surface on a base of 22 – 38" Snowmaking took place overnight and will continue throughout the day today. Be aware that the Western Express will open at 10a.m. today, and every Tuesday morning, for scheduled maintenance. The snow will continue to fall the rest of the week and the low temperatures have decided to stick around, making for some great skiing and riding at Snowshoe! Please be aware of snow guns on open trails and ski and ride with caution. The SCION WV Open is coming up this weekend! January 27 – 28, call 1-877-441-4FUN to find out how to enter and for more information.”

Winterplace Resort – They picked up another 1” of natural snow (3” in the last 48 hours) and they too are making snow as long as temps allow. We have a good number of photos that we’ll be posting for Winterplace today!

Bryce Resort – They picked up a bit of snow overnight but they are reporting that they did not make snow.

Massanutten Resort – We spoke with Steve Showalter this morning because the SSAA is incorrectly showing that they received another 3” of snow over the last 24 hours. They did see a dusting, and conditions are great there. The temp at 9am was 25° and they are making snow!

Wintergreen Resort – Sarah Lovejoy shares, “We opened two more trails overnight, Tequila and Sunrise! Today we will be skiing and riding on 13 trails and 4 lifts will be running. The slopes will open at 9am and close at 10pm. The Plunge will be closed Tuesday January 23rd through Thursday January 25th so that we can make snow and increase the number of tubing lanes available. We plan to reopen The Plunge at 2pm on Friday. Our snowmaking plan for this coming week includes getting Upper Turkey, Devils Elbow, The Gap, Tyro and the Terrain Park open by next weekend. Please check this report throughout the week. We will be knocking trails off our list almost daily.”

Ober Gatlinburg Ski Area – They made snow overnight and still maintain three open trails today. We will attempt to post some photos of Ober today as well.

Appalachian Ski Mountain – Snowguns are blasting away and App may make snow as long as temps allow. The temp this morning was 23°

Cataloochee Ski Area – They are reporting 26° and we’re watching snowmaking ops going down at the popular Maggie Valley resort.

Hawksnest Ski Resort – We spoke with Rowe up there and although it doesn’t show that they are making snow (on the live camera) they actually ARE doing so, but up on Sock Em Dog!  Rowe said, "A lot more people ski and ride on Sock Em than on Top Gun so we’re focusing on the money trails right now and we’ll get to Top Gun next!"

Sapphire Valley – Their normal schedule has them closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. They should reopen Wednesday at 5pm.

Ski Beech – They are reporting 23° this morning and Beech’s 5506’ elevations “wrung out” ½” of snow from the little bit of moisture that was in the air up there! They too are making snow to open more terrain soon! Highs will only get into the mid 20s or so at Beech today so bundle up and wear your goggles! Today is TWO FOR TUESDAY at Ski Beech. During DAY SKIING SESSIONS two of you can ski for the price of one! Go pair up!

Sugar Mountain –Sugar is reporting 21° and a “heavy dusting” of snow. (We’re so proud!) Sugar is making snow and will be as long as temps allow (and that should be all day). Sugar will be making snow this week on Whoopdedoo, the Terrain Park area, Sugar Slalom and the Tubing Park. (Tubing is closed right now.) Sugar expects to open more terrain by the end of the week.

Wolf Ridge Resort – The Wolf is showing 29° this morning and snowmaking is ongoing at this time. They will have nine trails open today and five tonight. Wolf wanted us to make sure that you guys know that The “Breakaway” side of the mountain will be open on Friday and Saturday nights. We also mentioned this yesterday but it bears repeating.

Wolf Ridge Ski Resort Will Be Hosting a Slope Style Competition this Weekend!

The competition will heat up on January 27th at Wolf Ridge Ski Resort as the slopes host a slope style competition at Park Place, the resort’s new Terrain Park. The new park is located just off Upper Boardwalk on the Breakaway side of Wolf Ridge. The competition begins at 1 PM and will include skiers and snowboarders.

Each competitor will be given 2 runs judged by a panel of 3 judges. The score will be based on style, amplitude and technicality. The top 5 competitors will move on to a final 3rd run. Prizes will be given to top 3 competitors. (possible prizes could be cash, gear, passes, trophy)

Registration for the competition will begin at 9 AM at the Upper Wolf Ridge Lodge. There will be a $15 registration fee and a 25% discount on lift tickets for competitors. Prizes will be given to top 3 competitors.

The event is co-sponsored by Breakaway Village, Zero Gravity Skate Park of Brevard, Red Bull and Wolf Ridge Ski Resort. For more information call 828-689-4111.

Rest assured that no matter where you ski today…conditions will be just short of awesome. Continued snowmaking weather and some natural snow is in the forecast as well! Look for highs in the 20s and 30s and lows in the TEENS and 20s all the way through AT LEAST next Monday! That means more terrain and slope opening! If you have a trip planned for this week or weekend, it will be near perfect timing.

It’s PAINFUL Telling a Loved One That They Are Fat!

After Dave Snow’s story on Sunday afternoon, we received 37 emails and a couple of message board comments. I spent about an hour putting together a long follow-up to the story because I personally feel (as did all of the emails that we received) that Dave made very good points. In conversations with some employees at Ski Beech, it is obvious that even they agree with Dave’s comments…at least most of them.  When you’re that close to something…it’s sometimes HARD to accept the facts. We love Beech and will tell anyone that you NEED to visit them because they are GREAT!  However, I will stand by Dave’s story and if I had to do it over again, I would post it, because I think he had the right attitude in saying that he wanted HIS favorite resort to step things up a bit. In summary, why not shoot for better than the rest?

We’ll move on…

Photos of the Day Are Looking Good!

Have you guys been noticing how phenomenal some of the Photos of the Day are this season??? To get the most of your daily visit to us, be sure to check out the Photos of the Day on both SkiNC and SkiSoutheast.com as they each feature separate photos. Also, to see ALL of the photos submitted each day, you can choose the resort that you want to look at, by clicking on that link from the front page, then once you are on that page, click the Photos of the Day link. That will take you to ALL of the most recent photo submissions for each resort! It’s worth a few minutes each day to look at several resorts. We’ve been getting some awesome shots from many resorts and some of the more recent ones from Snowshoe, Canaan and Timberline are particularly awesome due to all of the snow they’ve gotten over the last few days. Be sure to check them out!

Also we posted a different video on the front of SkiSoutheast.com so you’ll want to skip over than and check it out as well.
