If you planned a ski getaway for this weekend you will be among those who experience the best ski conditions of the season, no matter where you decide to go. Most resorts have bases that we are rating in GREAT category and all have groomed and/or packed powder conditions. Many resorts are in such great shape that the snowguns will be off during ski sessions so you’re going to have a great weekend.

The weather will be very nice as well as you can expect some clouds and slight chances of snow flurries throughout the weekend and highs in the 20s into West Virginia and 30s into Virginia and North Carolina. Lows tonight will bring on the snow guns again.

Many resorts have races and/or boardercross events going on, so check out some of the highlights and turn this darn computer OFF and go ski, ride or watch others do it!

Here’s some quick highlights:

Snowshoe Mountain is the host to the West Virginia Open this weekend and the conditions and weather could not be cooperating any better! It is 18° this morning and the high should only get to about 24° or so with a chance of snow later in the day and into Sunday with even colder temps on Sunday!

Laura Parquette writes, "Snowshoe is just 1 trail away from being 100% open. We now have 234 skiable acres available, with only Lower Shay’s Revenge yet to open! January continues to be kind to the Snowshoe, as 7" of snow fell on the resort this week, bringing our total for the month to 35". The natural snow has been complimented by our snowmaking, which continues to occur almost around the clock. Today we will shut down snowmaking during the day, so skiers and riders can enjoy an unimpeded day on our amazing conditions. Silver Creek is 100% open, including night skiing and riding and the tubing hill. Our 4 Terrain Park areas are also in great shape, with features being built and improved nightly. Today, freestlyin’ takes center stage at the annual WV Open. The region’s richest rail jam puts $2000 cash on the line for the best skier and best snowboarder; 1 event, 2 winners, $4000.The competition starts at 5pm out on Skidder Slope. Follow the sound of the live DJ spining tunes and check out this great event! It’s going to be a great weekend at Snowshoe, so get in your car and get up here!"

Winterplace Resort becomes the first West Virginia ski area to get to 100% open today! Winterplace wrote, "Ridgerunner and the Terrain Park will open at noon or a little later. All trails are open! The Snowtubing Park and Kiddie park will open at 9 am. All trails and the terrain park will be open! That’s right we will be 100% open!"

Did you guys get that? Winterplace is 100% open! 😉

Bryce Resort – They host the Shenandoah Junior/Master USSA SL Today. They are 100% open and the weather is expected to provide a bit of ambience today as well with some chances of light snow and highs around 34° and lows around 21° on Saturday.

Wintergreen Resort – They are reporting 25° and they open BIG ACORN today which now gives them 22 of 25 trails open. The weather should be very nice today with highs near 38° or so and lows tonight around 22° with a slight chance of snow flurries.

Cataloochee wants us to remind their fans to join the Cat Crew on Sunday afternoons for the Cataloochee Recreational Race Series. $10.00 gets you in and $1.00 of your race entry fee will be donated to KARE the Kids Advocacy Resource Effort of Haywood County. So go out and race to support a great cause! Individuals race against the clock for the best of two runs. Top three challengers in both men’s and womens’ age divisions win cool stuff. You must be 7 years of age or older to participate. Racing is from 1pm-3pm with awards ceremony at 4pm, so dust off those racing skills and test your luck. The Cat is where it’s at on Sunday afternoon’s Recreational Race Series. Call the ski area for more information.

Hawksnest Ski Resort – Remember that they are hosting Collegiate Races this weekend. They will have Boardercross/Skiercross on Saturday and Giant Slalom on Sunday. Check out yesterday’s story for more details if you missed it.

Hawksnest opens Sock Em Dog today.

Ski Beech has some races going on up their as well. The Crescent Ski Council ski race is on Robbins Run today and Sunday. Also Oz fans will want to note that it is open today.

Sugar made snow last night but the guns of OFF and will stay off during ski sessions! That tells you all you need to know about how good their base is! They have 19 of 20 trails open, terrain fun and ice skating to boot.
