Holiday Skiing and Riding will be GREAT –

Appalachian Ski Mountain is the only resort open in North Carolina today…(((UPDATED 5pm – THEY ARE NOW CLOSED)))and with only one trail (Lower Big Appal). We’re a little surprised that they’re open as the live cam over there isn’t a pretty site. Don’t be surprised if after the rain today…they too are closed for Friday. Stay tuned.

Understandably we’re receiving a lot of emails from you guys asking things like, "With it so close to Christmas and New Years will there be good conditions at (insert your favorite resort)?"

THANKFULLY, the answer to that question appears to be a resounding "YES". You could almost hear the collective sigh of relief among all of the resort operators in North Carolina, when the weather forecast for the area changed to winter-like for the foreseeable future. With the kind of cold air and scattered natural snow that we have in the forecast beginning Friday night…you will quickly see resorts crank up every snowgun that they have and openings will follow soon after. (Expect some to open or reopen as early as Sunday…while most will focus on having a nice base to play on by mid-week into next weekend.)

Great weather ahead…if you’re a penguin! – The forecast turns cold and snowy beginning Friday and continues all the way through the extended outlook through next Wednesday – at least. Highs will be in the 20s and 30s, with overnight lows in the teens and 20s. With those kinds of temps and a dash or two (from 1" to 4") of natural snow during the same period, you can expect to see nearly around-the-clock snowmaking everywhere.

All of the resorts have a snowmaking protocol, where they make snow on the main trails, and then branch out to the rest, so look for their more popular trails to open up quickly…followed soonafter by the rest.

UNTIL THE NEXT TIME…THINK SNOW!
