Go Ski or Ride If You Can!

First Trax

Happy Hump Day! I feel like I just said that yesterday but I guess it has been a week. Time is flying by and I can’t believe it’s almost March! We only have about a month or so of skiing and riding here in the Southeast so definitely take advantage of it while you can. I was hoping that several of the resorts in the region were going to be able to make snow last night. It doesn’t look like that was the case. Temperatures did get cold enough at a lot of the ski areas, but only Wintergreen and Bryce in Virginia chose to make any last night. I know Cataloochee was planning on it, but temperatures did not get cold enough there it appears. As for the others, I guess they are happy with their current base depths and didn’t feel the need to add to them. I’m sure the underdeveloped snow in the forecast for Thursday and Friday had something to do with that decision. Either way, everywhere is still looking good for the time being.

The Cat looking good this morning>>>>

There’s not too much to talk about today so I’m just going to get into some announcements. Visitors to the High Country Web Cams site will now notice that the camera on the BB&T Building and the one in Pack Square are now working again. Both of these are located in Asheville and offer some pretty cool views of the area around there. We’re in the process of improving the site and adding some new content to it so make sure to keep checking it out.

Don’t forget about the Ski Southeast Snowshoe Summit coming up next weekend! I know I mentioned this yesterday, but I will probably continue to do so everyday until it gets here. Conditions up at the Shoe are still great right now and that should not change between now and next weekend. The Cuervo Games of Winter will be going on that weekend as well so that will just add to the fun. Right now, it looks like we are going to try and do a get together on Saturday night since a lot of people will still be just arriving on Friday night. Make sure to join us!

<<We don’t see too many pics like this from Massanutten
Finally, it’s time to announce the winners of the trip report competition from last week. I delayed it a day since the board was down on Monday and I’m glad I did as member marzski posted a very nice looking trip report from Massanutten on there yesterday. I don’t see trip reports from there too often so he is our first winner. NCSUsKING is our second winner. He posted not one, not two, but three awesome reports from West Virginia last week. Like Massanuten, I don’t see too many reports from the resorts up there (especially Timberline and Canaan) so I decided to make him a winner as well. Great job guys! You can email me or PM me on the messageboard to let me know which tickets you want and how you want me to send them to you.

So that’s it for today. Here are the resorts…

Appalachian Ski Mountain – 29°- Open today on all 12 slopes with a wet granular surface. I’m kind of surprised that they did not make any snow last night but I guess when you have a huge base like they do it is not necessary. Ice skating is also open today.

Beech Mountain Resort – 25°- Open today on 100% of the mountain with a groomed surface. The terrain park is open with a multitude of fun features and was rebuilt over the weekend. Ice skating is also open today.

Cataloochee – 38.4°- They are open on 100% of the mountain with a groomed surface today. Tubing is open as well. I don’t think it got quite cold enough there last night to make any snow, but they are still in great shape and it looks really good up there on the cam this morning. Today is Family Day at Cat where a child 17 and under will receive a free lift ticket when accompanied by a parent purchasing a full price adult day, twilight, or night lift ticket. This weekend is also Fire and Rescue Appreciation Days, offering discount lift tickets to fire and rescue personnel and family. Very cool! Also, just a reminder that it’s Learn to Ski and Snowboard Season at Cataloochee and with the purchase of rentals you get a free 1.5 hour beginner lesson!

Sapphire Valley – 28°- They are closed today and will reopen on Friday at noon.

Sugar Mountain – 30°- Open today on 100% of the mountain with a perfectly groomed surface. Sugar did not make any snow last night either, which is kind of surprising. However, like App they have a huge base and are in great shape. Skating and tubing are also open today. This Thursday they will be having their Spyder Sample Sale where there will be huge savings on select Spyder winter items.

Wolf Ridge – 31° – Open on 13 of 23 slopes today with a groomed surface. Here’s what they have to say – “Its Wednesday, 31 degrees on the mountain and the weather man is calling for cloudy skies today. We will have 13 runs and 2 lifts open today with the following Specials: Home School: $29.00 lift/ski/lesson: College Night: 15.00 Lift ticket: Ladies night: $17.00 lift ticket: The Slopes will be open today from 9.00am to 10.00pm so get here early and be the first to Shred the snow. See you at the Wolf!!!”
