GLASS HALF FULL? MAYBE WITH A BUCKET OF RAIN TODAY AND SATURDAY!?!?

Probably too much has been shared about how bad the weather has been for skiers & snowboarders across the Southeast and mid-Atlantic for much of December. Unfortunately, it is going to get worse before it gets better!

As I was waking up this morning I received an alert sharing the fact that up to three inches of rain could hit the state of West Virginia. As I checked out the forecast for each mountain, the rains look to be in the 1″ to 2″ range across most mountaintops beginning later on Friday and lasting through the weekend.

Today is the last day of December 2021 and good riddance, right? We’ve experienced a snow-drought; we’ve had little in the way of snowmaking temperatures – especially in the last seven days or so; we’ve seen too much in the way of wet conditions/rain; and we now have SEVEN of our SIXTEEN ski areas temporarily CLOSED until January 3rd or 4th.

As you’ll see below, snow grooming crews have been doing “heroes work” to keep slopes open at the NINE ski areas that are open…and now the forecast for this evening, Saturday and part of Sunday is for anywhere from one-inch to THREE inches of rain to hit the region.

That will likely prompt some additional slopes closures, if not temporary resort closures.

For today, check the SNOW REPORT for all of the details.

HELP IS ON THE WAY!

Meteorologist Brad Panovich provided a Skier’s Forecast full of hope and good news. All I have to share is – “Brad, from YOUR LIPS to GOD’S ear!”

Check it out.

GROOMERS ARE THE KINGS OF THE MOUNTAIN RIGHT NOW

I clipped this short video to share the fact that snow grooming crews work all night and then STILL hit the mountain early to do any repairs and maintenance that they can to make our conditions as good as possible.

NOTABLES

BRYCE RESORT SHARED:
We know it has been warm but we’re still OPEN! We have 5 trails open – Bootlegger, Redeye, White Lightning, Little Nip, and Bunny Slope. Thanks to the early efforts from our snowmaking crew we have plenty of snow to get us through the rest of this warm spell. A cold front is forecasted to move in late Sunday which means we will be firing up the snow guns once again.

CANAAN VALLEY RESORT SHARED:
On this final day of 2021, we will be keeping Upper Canaan Curve, Chute, Valley Vista, and Face open on the mountain, along with Sissy Schuss and Critter Crawl open in our beginner area.

WINTERPLACE RESORT SHARED:
Today we will be open 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM – Due to the unseasonable weather, operational hours are being adjusted to conserve snow. Operations will be suspended January 1st – January 3rd. We plan to reopen Tuesday January 4th after cold weather and snowmaking resumes. Snowtubing operations are also suspended until January 8th. Please check the updated snow report for current conditions and hours of operation.

SNOWSHOE MOUNTAIN SHARED
Cupp Run is now closed until we can get another extended snowmaking opportunity. Coverage is thin in many areas and there are bare spots so please ski/ride with caution and pay attention to all trail markings. Cheers to a cold and snowy start to 2022! (Hopefully!)

As I look out of my rental unit, Snowshoe is looking pretty darn great considering the temps and rainfall. About 15 of us are meeting at the top of the Ballhooter Lift to make as many turns as possible before the masses hit the slopes.

That will do it for me today. We are truly thankful for you, our readers. Check back tomorrow for more!
