We’re in store for what looks to be a phenomenal weekend of skiing! We have some of the prettiest views this morning, with brilliant blue skies and sunshine highlighting the snowy peaks that surround the area. I’m looking out my office window as I am writing this and Grandfather Mountain is about as pretty as it gets. It’s cold out this morning. My truck was frozen to the point that I had to chisel the door open and it took quite a lot of scraping to get the windshield clear enough to drive in.

Actually the temperatures are all over the place this morning. At 7:40am Beech Mountain is reporting 25°, Banner Elk 17°, Sugar Mountain 31°. Boone 24° and Blowing Rock is at 28°. Radiational cooling and snowpack is to blame or so says the weather gurus this morning. All I know is that it’s cold and that means that the snow will be p-r-e-t-t-y sweet no matter where you choose to ski today. This weekend is shaping up to be pretty nice in the North Carolina mountains. Yesterday there looked like a threat of rain on Saturday and now that looks like MAYBE some very light misty rain or SNOW at the higher elevations only LATE on Saturday evening. Today, most all day Saturday (except for that brief spit of rain or snow late), and Sunday are looking very nice. Highs should be in the upper 40s today and Saturday. Sunday should be even milder. Overnight lows tonight should drop into the mid 20s and then Saturday night should dip to around freezing.

With all of this sunshine…Don’t forget sunscreen today!

Looking Ahead! – For all of you Cataloochee Resort fans…remember that this is the last weekend of skiing for the 2004-2005 season up there. If you won some passes from us last week and didn’t make it last weekend…this is your last chance. Conditions should be really nice this weekend. Cataloochee is open for DAY SKIING only today, Saturday and Sunday and will close for the season Sunday at 4:30pm.

Looking at the weather for the week ahead, we’re going to go out on a limb and say that if you love Beech Mountain and want to get in some last minute turns on what may be the best conditions of the season at Ski Beech…get them in today, or this weekend. We’re thinking that they may look at the forecast for next week and with a couple of rainy-looking days in the mix…they may just call it quits this Sunday, March 20th. Don’t rule out that Ski Beech COULD extend their season one more weekend and we’ll let you as soon as they say anything. (We say it that way, because we don’t think that THEY know just yet! So keep your fingers crossed and get up there and ski if you want to extend their season!)

Have a great day and see you on the slopes!
