Cold, Snowy and Windy – That is the Skier’s Forecast for the Southeast Ski Areas

We’re going to throw a little change of direction on you guys weather-wise this morning and jump around a little.

Our great friends at Ober Gatlinburg are getting some much needed SNOW and COLD today. There is actually a heavy snow warning in effect there.  Accumulations are expected to be in the 3-6” range with locally higher amounts.  It will be gusty windy 25mph and higher with gusts to 55mph.  Chance of snow is 80% all day…tapering late. Highs in the 20s and lows in the teens and 20s.

Sunday…Mostly sunny. Not as cool. Highs in the 40s. North winds 5 to 15 mph in the morning becoming light and variable.

We’ll be up at McHenry, Maryland and WISP Resort next weekend to do some skiing and visit with some old and new friends, so we’re going to look at their weather first.

It’s in the 30s right now at Wisp and they are looking at falling temps and SNOW today. Highs in the mid 30s and lows around 18° tonight. They are looking to pick up 2” or so of snow,  Sunday looks good as well for snowmaking with highs staying in the 30s and lows in the 20s.

Our friends at Snowshoe Mountain look to be getting a good bit of accumulating snowfall from this system. Pocahontas County should see 2-4” of snow (maybe more in isolated areas).  The temp was 22° at 7am and temps should hold there and then drop later.  Snowshoe has had a dusting thus far but winds and cold temps will make it interesting no matter how much snow falls. Temperature falling into the lower 20s this afternoon. Northwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

Sunday…Mostly sunny. Highs around 30. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Wind chill values as low as 1 below.

Sapphire Valley in North Carolina should be snowy today with a possible 1-2” of snow and a high of 35° today.  Expect it to windy there Saturday and Sunday.

Wolf Laurel in North Carolina should see 4” or more of snow Saturday…Snow showers likely…With damaging winds developing. Snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches…With 6 inches at The higher elevations. Early highs in the mid 30s…With temperatures falling. Northwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 70 mph this afternoon. Chance of snow 70 percent.

Sunday…Mostly sunny and breezy. Highs in the mid 40s. Northwest winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph…Becoming west 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon.

Wintergreen Resort in Virginia looks a little warmer up there.  Expect a mixed bag of wintry weather according to the National Weather Service. Looks like some clouds and some slight chances of rain showers.  Temps will be falling throughout the day. Windy conditions (and more sun) will prevail Sunday.

Massanutten, located in Harrisonburg, Virginia is expecting cloudy conditions today with a 30% chance of light rain mixing with snow this afternoon.  Little or no accumulation. West winds 15 to 20 mph…Becoming northwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph this afternoon. Chance of precipitation 30 percent.

Sunday…Sunny and windy. Highs in the lower 40s. Northwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.
