Beech Mountain resort has invest a considerable amount of time and money over the past few summers in an effort to bring world class mountain bike riding to the Southeast.  That hard work has payed off as they have been award a two year contract to host USA Cycling’s Mountain Bike Gravity National Championships this year and in 2012!  “We are pleased to host Gravity Nationals, while also producing a facility for all mountain bike enthusiasts,” says Ryan Costin, Beech Mountain Resort’s general manager. “Beech Mountain Resort realizes the increased popularity of cycling, and the demand for a facility with lift access for cyclists.”

The construction of several courses has been taking place all summer long.  A Pro, Amateur, and Dual Slalom course will provide varying terrain types for all levels of riders.  Brevard native and 2007 Dual Slalom National Champion Christopher Herndon has designed and overseen construction of these courses, ensuring that they are world class trails.  I’ve seen pictures and videos recently of people riding up there, and I must say that it looks awesome.  It honestly makes me want to take up the sport.  The installation of lift trays has also taken place on the high speed quad, insuring riders can get themselves and their bikes back to the top of the mountain as quickly as possible.

Combined with the terrain, views, and general vibe of Beech Mountain, and the resort really has created a top notch facility that all types of riders, from the professional to the newbie, will love and appreciate.

This year’s event will take place next weekend, September 22-25.  In addition to the riding, the Brews n’ Views event will be taking place from 2-6pm on Saturday.  For just $25, you can sample delicious beers from over two dozen micro and craft brewers.  There will be live music and scenic lift rides will also be available.  Don’t worry about taking the kids either, as there will be a Kids Village with inflatables, games, and face painting.  To top it all off, there will be a fireworks show at dark.  There will be fun for everyone!

This is the first time that this prestigious event has come to the Southeast, so make sure to head out to Beech Mountain next weekend and show your support!
