The Beech Bums are looking to give back, and they’re asking for help.

The group is holding a cleanup day, Sunday, March 10 at 10 a.m. The littering has gotten a bit out of control this season, and as Andrew DiSogra points out, it’s tough to see your home mountain this way.

“We hate seeing resources that should be working on operations be directed towards trash cleanup efforts,” he said in a Facebook post. “This event is coluntary; there is no obligation to show up or help. That said, the more Bums we have, the faster it’ll go and the greater our impact will be!”

Beech will provide cleaning materials such as gloves and trash bags. Drop by if you’re in the area.

Olympic Memories

On this day, 44 years ago. The Miracle On Ice.

Sure winning an Olympic gold medal in the ski slalom must be pretty great, but do you know what’s even better? Winning that medal while your twin brother takes silver.

That happened, forty years ago this month, when Phil and Steve Mahre did just that at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. To top it all off, Phil’s wife Holly had just given birth to their second child in Arizona merely an hour before the race started, and didn’t find out until a TV interview after the race.

How’s that for the best day of your life?

The twins are being honored at White Pass Ski Area, the mountain that their father worked as the mountain manager, Saturday. Skiers and snowboarders are invited to join the Mahre twins by running a dual slalom course or racing against them.

Let’s get into what you need to know to ski and ride in the southeast today:

Canaan Valley Resort

What makes Canaan Valley Resort Canaan Valley Resort?

This weekend: it might be Subaru Winterfest.

The event is sponsored by WDTV Channel 5, and Jenkin’s Subaru. Here are some of the features:

  • $10 off lift tickets for all Subaru owners
  • First 50 parking spots reserved for Subaru drivers
  • Come check out new 2024 car models!
  • Cocktail Specials in Quenchers Pub
  • Giveaway from Jenkin’s Subaru and Canaan Valley Resort

It’s considerably warmer at Canaan Valley than it has been in the past few days – 40 degrees this morning. Snowmaking is in progress, and there are 24 trails open with three lifts spinning. The base depth is 32 to 54 inches.

Snowshoe

There’s a little rain at the ‘Shoe to start the morning off. That has since gone away, and temperatures are sitting just above freezing at 34 degrees. There are 60 trails open and there will be 12 trails open tonight. Don’t forget, kids ski free on closing week, from March 25 through 31.

“We’re geared up for adventure on the slopes, so grab your gear and let’s make the most of it!” the snow report says. “Please note, Spruce will be closed as we prepare for this weekend’s USASA racing event.”

Winterplace

Just two days until the Family Race and Mini Big Air return.

“If you missed your chance before you won’t want to miss our Bluebird Festival. Get your tickets ahead of time and save!” the snow report says.

There’s another Throwdown Thursday tonight from 5 p.m. until close. And Friday Night Gates return tomorrow.

Massanutten

The St. Christopher’s School Ski and Snowbaord Club hit The ‘Nutt for its inaugural trip this week.

The mountain is back to 100% open yet again today.

Progress is happening. A week ago, the resort’s marketing team posted a few photos detailing the completed projects. Those include:

  • Exterior stonework
  • All exterior doors installed
  • Welcome desk finished
  • Countertops and wall panels placed in coffee shop
  • Restaurant posts, rafters, and ductwork painted
  • All rental equipment organized
  • Equipment hall furniture placed
  • Exterior way-finding signage installed

Wintergreen

It’s another perfect midweek day, according to the snow reporting team. Reader David Perault was there yesterday.

“It’s been a great week of cold nights and sunny days,” he said. “Wintergreen has taken advantage of it, resulting in some incredible snow.”

Timberline

Timberline is still 100% open. Get over there while you can!

Cataloochee

There are 17 trails open at Cataloochee, and night skiing is open.

  • 12-foot Rainbow Box
  • Up Down Flat Rail

Video of the Day

Question: How do you know if someone is a telemark skier?

Answer: They’ll remind you every 5 minutes.

The video of the day has been awarded to skiers and snowboarders alike. Park skiers, street snowboarders, big mountain skiers, splitboarders, and nearly everything in between. But those freeheelers have never had their moment. Until now.

I introduce you to This Is Telemark.

Finally, a full-length film dedicated to those who have chosen to free the heel and free the mind. Produced by CJ Coccia, and TELE COLO, the movie looks earnest, as Powder’s Jack O’Brien points out in his story.

You can watch the full movie on Vimeo. It’s $5 to rent or $10 to own. https://vimeo.com/ondemand/thisistelemark
