Epic Ski and Snowboarding Conditions Continue and this weekend promises to be awesome!!!

I did my best Apolo Anton Ohno impression this morning …speed skating out of my neighborhood 😉 as a slipperier-than-normal snowfall coated our roads.  As much as seven inches of snow fell around my office and home area on Tuesday into last night.

Tuesday’s storm was snnnnoooowwww beautiful! No winds and plenty of snow made for one of those snowfalls that lays perfectly on the trees and it is nice to see a new coat of white to cover up what vehicle traffic tends to do to dirty the snow. It is certainly a beautiful day to be in the mountains today.

Most of the ski areas are reporting anywhere from 4-8" of snowfall in the last 24 hours here in the the NC Mountains with the higher amounts actually falling over around the Asheville mountains this time around. Even Sapphire Valley saw 6.5" of snow. Cataloochee reported 8" and Beech and Sugar are each reporting 5-6" of new snow.

The West Virginia and Maryland resort areas are reporting 1-3" of new snow but now they will probably see those northwest flow snows kick in today with 3-6" of snow possible for Snowshoe Mountain today through Friday.

Snow showers and flurries will linger today and might add another 2-4" between today and Thursday for most of the ski areas.

Then sunshine is on tap for this weekend and highs in the mid 30s for the WV ski areas and perhaps low to mid 40s across the Virginia, Tennessee and NC ski resort areas.

Base depths are astronomically good and conditions are in the best shape that we’ve maybe ever seen!

Here are some snowfall totals for you guys! It just keeps on coming this winter, doesn’t it?

Bryce Resort – No reported snow. They were only open with 4 trails on Tuesday after telling us that traffic didn’t warrant having more trails open, but today they are back to 100% open with all 8 trails for day sessions. Looking at CoCoRaHS reports Bryce has now seen 66.1" of snow on the season with most of it coming on three major storms. With all of the snow skirting the area they’ve only picked up about one-half inch of it since mid February.

Massanutten Resort is reporting 1" of new snow and all 14 trails and 7 lanes of tubing open as well as their terrain parks for day and night sessions. We spoke with someone on Tuesday who was telling me about how fast Massanutten’s snow tubing hill is. He had done most in the area and was claiming Mass has THE BEST. Sounds like a challenge!

Wintergreen Resort – We spoke with Lindsea up there and they picked up between four and five inches of new snow and are now at 93" on the season. Wintergreen is 100% open with day and night sessions and tubing available.

Anne Marie writes, "MORE SNOW OVERNIGHT BRINGS THIS YEARS NATURAL SNOW TOTAL TO 93 INCHES. THIS IS THE MOST SNOW SINCE WINTERGREEN OPENED ITS DOORS IN THE MID 1970’S. CONDITIONS CONTINUE TO BE SPECTACULAR! PLENTY OF SKIING AND RIDING STILL TO GO, WITH PLANS TO SKI, RIDE AND TUBE THROUGH AT LEAST MARCH 21ST!"

Appalachian Ski Mountain – CoCoRaHS is reporting 4" of new snow and a 90" base with 100% of the mountain in groomed powder shape for day and night sessions and ice skating. All terrain parks are in sweet shape as well!

Beech Mountain Resort – Reporting 5" of new snow and that takes Beech to 114.7" on the season. They are open for day and night sessions. They’ve closed Oz Run for today and tubing is closed as well. They do have ice skating open.

Cataloochee Ski Area – Reporting 8.3" of new snow and a 58" base and all 16 trails and their terrain park open for day and night sessions. Cat is now up to 65.4" of snow on the season!

We’ve been talking about Sugar’s Spyder Sale of late but the Sugar Mountain Sport Shop has all sorts of specials going on and even 50% off all Nils winter apparel. If you’re looking for some great deals on ski clothing and accessories check out Sugar.

Wolf Ridge – They’ve seen 6" of new snow and are open for day and night sessions with 14 of 20 trails open. Snow tubing and Terrain park are open as well. 86.3" of snow has fallen at the Mars Hill area ski resort this season!
