Some Local Happenings to Mark Your Calendars For

First Trax

Stay up to date by getting notified of new posts!

Here we are ALREADY into mid August!  Man time flies!  I know there are tons of you guys out there thinking that the Summer is creeping by and can’t wait for the 2006-1007 ski season, but some of us have some work to do yet…so we could use a little more time!

Anyway, before I share some upcoming events to make note of, I have to tell you that EVERY SINGLE morning has provided us with some morning fog around the High Country!  For those unaware, according to an old wives tale, oldtimers used to "forecast" the subsequent winter’s snow storms by counting the number of foggy mornings in August.  If there’s anything to it – then we’re already looking at a pretty snowy winter ahead!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS —

It’s been hot as the hinges of hell across much of the Southeast lately and if you’re looking for an excuse to beat the heat off the mountain then you’ll be interested in a couple of events coming up.

COME TO RIVERFEST – Saturday August 26th at Valle Crucis!

Caroline Bond, a gorgeous young lady who is coordinating this year’s Watauga RiverFest, has been working very hard to get the word out about all the fun planned for Saturday, August 26th from 10am-3pm at Valle Crucis Park.  We can’t say no to a pretty face, so here we are doing our part to pass the word!

RIVERFEST is celebrating its seventh year! The festival is an educational event that highlights ways to protect rivers, focusing on the Watauga, Elk, Linville, and New Rivers. It serves as a catalyst for community action with exhibits, hands on demonstrations, and the chance to talk one-on-one with experts on water quality. The atmosphere is festive with music, activities for children, food, storytelling, and lots of energy. It is all set against the backdrop of the charming Valle Crucis Park beside the Watauga River.

RIVERFEST is coordinated by Watauga River Conservation Partners, a Chapter of the Western North Carolina Alliance. The mission of the Watauga River Conservation Partners is to work to preserve, protect from pollution and, where necessary, to restore lost quality of the river and its tributaries.

The festivities will include storytelling by Orville Hicks, a bird walk with Curtis Smalling, a presentation by Genesis Wildlife Sanctuary, fly tying and casting lessons, fishing for fun, music, arts and crafts and more.  They also have a fundraising walk, a silent auction and 20+ educational booths planned for the day. You barbeque fans will enjoy that Carolina Barbeque will be on hand providing some of the best barbeque in the area!

Mark your calendars and plan to attend!  For more information you can visit their website at www.WataugaRiverfest.org or if you have any questions or would like more information, please contact them at [email protected]

Until Next time…
