Let’s get you guys right to the only ski area open in the Virginia’s and Maryland area…and that would be Snowshoe Mountain. It is COLD with a capital BRRR this morning at their 4848′ elevations. Snowshoe is reporting 12° this morning at their base area and 18° up top. Snowshoe reports, "A dusting of natural snow fell on the mountain during the day Friday, and cold temperatures allowed the snowmaking equipment to be turned on. Snowmaking will continue as long as temperatures allow. The following slopes are groomed and open: Heisler Way, Whistlepunk, Skidder, Crosscut, Spruce Glades, Tailtree and Powdermonkey. Open lifts are Skidder, Powdermonkey and Grabhammer. Four (4) terrain park features are available as well. Snowmaking will continue as temperatures allow."

We’ll now take you to where all of the rest of the open ski areas are within the Mid Atlantic and Southeast region and that is North Carolina.

Appalachian Ski Mountain is reporting 19° at 8am and they have added Upper Big Appal to the open trails – giving them three now. App is reporting a base of 10-18" and groomed conditions.

Cataloochee Ski Area is reporting 18° and they are skiing on three trails as well on a base of 16-22" and groomed conditions. They will operate on Saturday from 8:30am until 10pm. A lot of people have been asking us about their popular tubing hill and Cat wants you guys to know, "Tube World, Cataloochee’s snow tubing park, located in Maggie Valley, across from Ghost Town, four miles from the ski area will not open until December 15, weather permitting."

Hawksnest began making snow on Friday morning and Justin Grimes told us that they were making good progress on opening the tubing hill. They are now looking at (Weather permitting) opening the snow tubing on Saturday, November 24th at 9am. The slopes will be open the following weekend, December 1st, weather permitting.

Ski Beech – Man we were surfing around trying to pick up on a camera up there and ALL of the cams are dead in the water this morning (we have three up there). We also noticed that the weather station that we have (and Ray’s up on Beech) are also dead this morning so all we can figure is that Skyline Telephone’s DSL must be out up there. No word on if Beech is making snow. Word is that Ski Beech is looking to open December 1st or so.

Sugar Mountain – It is showing 15° at the summit of their mountain and 22° at the bottom. Sugar has opened another trail (makes five open now) and they are riding for both day and night skiing on Saturday.

There’s no word yet from Wolf Ridge Ski Area. They have not yet made snow, so they may be waiting through this next mild period this week and then look to open early December.

THE REST…

Wisp Resort in Maryland IS making snow. They received a couple of inches of natural snow last week and began making snow in prepartion for their opening day. They look like they could be open right now so we have to think that they are shooting for sometime this next week or weekend as an opening day.

Winterplace Resort and Timberline are shooting for December 6th and 7th to open for the season and Canaan Valley us opening days before Christmas. Winterplace made some snow so they have things cranked up and preparing for a great season. Remember that meteorologist Brad Panovich is predicting a VERY SNOWY season for the West Virginia and Maryland resorts!

Wintergreen Resort in Virginia is making snow and already looking pretty nice! They reported, "20 glorious degrees at 7am! Our Snowmaking system cranked up around 3pm on Friday allowing us to begin producing the great snow our customers talk about. The start of Wintergreen’s 07-08 skiing and riding season is right around the corner. For the first week, we plan to focus our snowmaking efforts on Upper & Lower Dobie and in The Plunge Tubing Park. After we get some snow down in these areas we will shift to Eagles Swoop. We are getting ready for a great season and want to keep you in the loop about what is happening up here. Please keep checking our website to find out what’s new and to make plans to visit us when the snow starts flying.

07/08 Season Passes are on sale now with a special early season price of $219. Remember, this price goes up to $239 in Mid December so buy your pass now and save! By purchasing over the web you can knock off another $10 and get the individual pass for $209."
