Today, I’ll try and highlight how LITTLE one rain event impacts the base depths. Most of the resorts only experienced a 1-2″ drop in their respective base depths, in the last 24 hours. I always think there is a little misconception that heavy rains, “wash all the snow away, down the mountain” . . . the stats prove that it isn’t the case.

What does impact the base depths are the REPEATED or PROLONGED rain events. It DOESN’T look like we are going to have that much rain.

Rain tapers-off throughout the day in NC.

Cataloochee: 12/27 = 50-80″, 12/28 = 48-78″.

“We Have Plenty of Snow

We operate even when its raining and yes, we are open and have plenty of snow.” . . . Gotta love it

Beech Mountain: 12/27 = 44-60″, 12/28″ 42-58″. Beech had to knock-out a couple of lifts today from 7 to 5, (I don’t suspect it’s for anything major). On the bright-side, tonight is Family Feud Night at Beech Mountain Brewing (6-9pm).

Wolf Ridge: No change in reported base depth. According to their News Feed, the forecast does look on the up-and-up . . . “It’s currently raining on the mountain but is supposed to clear out by afternoon…bring a warm, dry change of clothes to slip into after hitting the slopes and head on up!”

Sapphire Valley: 12/27 = 24-58″, 12/28 = 23-58″. Sapphire Valley posted that they have, “HEAVY RAINS IN THE FORECAST- CALL AHEAD: 828-743-7663″

Sapphire is experiencing some ‘under-developed snow’

Appalachian Ski Mountain: No update on base depth. ASM actually adds a lift to their count today. Today, they are OPEN UNTIL MIDNIGHT on 10 runs and 5 lifts.

Smokey mountains are getting the Lions Share of the Rain

Ober Gatlinburg: 12/27 = 16-20″, 12/28 = 15-19″. Ober has 3 runs and 2 lifts open today until 10pm. The Smokey mountains have been receiving a lot of rain, but many of the NWS flood warnings and watches expire throughout today.

Rain tapers-off this afternoon in VA

Massanutten: 12/27 = 28″, 12/28 = 26″. Day 3 of their Snow Tubing being Sold Out for Today. Their news feed mentions that, “Rain should be ending later this afternoon.”

Wintergreen: No change in reported base depths. No change in Snow Report. The Mountain Message blog states, “It’s going to be an interesting weather day at Wintergreen. There will be milder temperatures with some liquid sunshine tapering off in the afternoon. This will have little impact on our conditions since the Snowmaking Team has built the slopes to weather whatever Mother Nature delivers. We have tons of snow which isn’t going away any time soon. Even with all the crazy weather, we got Highlands open!”

Bryce: No update on base depths. Open until 8:30pm tonight.

More terrain set to be open in WV

Canaan Valley: 12/27 = 36-48″, 12/28 = 24-48. The big news is that Canaan adds 8 more trails to the count, for a grand total of 30! The natural snow trails are still open too . . . tag some new trails today.

Snowshoe Mountain: No change in reported base depths . . . “we’ve got a nice base of snow on our open trails. The trails are still in great shape, with plenty of soft, playful snow for you to enjoy.” Rain ends around mid-afternoon today . . . “Our snowmaking crew is eager to get back out there and keep expanding terrain as quickly as possible.”

Timberline: No change in reported base depths. T-Line adds 2 trails to the count (one of which being Lower Almost Heaven = Blue). Timberline is open for Night skiing as well.

Winterplace: No change in reported base depths. This afternoon/evening looks like it will be great!

Wisp unveils their New Years Eve Celebration!

Wisp: No change . . . 12/27 = 18″, 12/28 = 18″. Wisp is open until 9pm on 14 runs and 7 lifts. The Mountain Message Blog mentions, “Behind the Scenes – in the Lodge, our staff is getting preparing to kick off our New Year’s Eve celebration.  Join us in the McHenry Lodge for a family-friendly evening with DJ Connor spinning today’s hits from 9pm-midnight.  Both Alpine Bar and Wispers Bar & Grill will be open as well.”
