Story by Will Mauney

Beautiful blue skies blanket the Blue Ridge this morning. It was very difficult driving past Sugar this morning to get here to do the morning ski reporting and firsttrax daily news. Not because of the roads, they’re fine, but because of what has to be some pristine corduroy on some of North Carolina’s finest slopes. I’m sure there are ski patrol and lift attendants all across the Southeast this morning watching the sun rise thinking what an awesome job they have. If you weren’t able to make it up to a mountain this weekend, now is the time. Today looks like it’s going to be a great day to be outside and enjoy some sun and snow.

A few people were questioning whether or not it would be good to ski or ride during Super Bowl Sunday. I don’t know about your resort but mine was awesome. It’s been a long time “secret” that Super Bowl Sunday means fewer crowds and generally fantastic snow. This was definitely the case at my resort and I took full advantage of it. We didn’t have 36 inches of new snow like Wisp did up in Maryland, but it was still amazing. Night skiing at Sugar was even more fun with no snowmaking, no lift lines and great conditions. I’m sure there were skier/snowboarders taking advantage of this “secret” all across our region.

Looks like we’re a bit overcast by 10am but with more snow on the way this week so get to your favorite resort and enjoy some of the best conditions the Southeast and Mid Atlantic have ever seen.

We’re on day 72 and there are 65 more days of opportunities to enjoy the snow for the 2009-2010 ski and snowboarding season!

That’s it for today. Go enjoy the snow! Check out the Snow Report at https://www.skisoutheast.com/skireports.php and please send us your favorite ski photos, ski videos, trip reports and comments to [email protected]
