February has indeed been good to the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic ski resorts. We had a number of good qualify storms come through, not to mention the big one mid-month, temps have been favorable, and we even got in a spring sneak peek. For such a short month, February sure did have a lot of diversity.
But you don’t have to take my word for it. Here’s what Wintergreen had to say yesterday, “Winter is not going away anytime soon. Weather forecasts predict cold temps hang around into the second weekend of March, maybe longer. Cold temps and incredible base depths will keep us skiing and riding into late March!”
The cold temps hanging around are no joke this morning. We have some biting temps out there this morning.
Canaan Valley: -6
Layer up if you’re heading to any of these places today. The good news is there will be PLENTY of sun and moderate winds with the temps warming up to the high 20’s to low 30’s.
The cold temperatures are great for making snow of course and we still have a handful of resorts that are taking full advantage. Appalachian has added 10” to their base, bring them up to 44-88”, Cataloochee added 4” to bring them to 62-92”, and Ober added 2-3” bringing them up to 42-48”.
You know, sometimes I maybe get a little too caught up in the highlight resorts of the day at the detriment of the others. The West Virginia resorts, along with Wisp, have definitely been the big news here lately, being blessed with a nice [thick] blanket of snow this week, but maybe the real story is with the resorts that have not been so lucky maybe but continue to offer us up great conditions day after day nonetheless.
I wondered out loud in a post earlier this week whether or not the resorts would invest in making more snow, considering our position in the season and the fact that there is just so much base out there right now. Well, that has been answered this week by member resorts such as Appalachian, Cataloochee, Sapphire Valley, Ober, Massanutten, and The Homestead. They are all making snow like crazy. I mean, Sapphire Valley has announced that this is their final weekend, and they are pumping it out like it’s December. Massanutten too has been just on a mission, making snow every night this week. Mass has some of the most passionate pass holders of anywhere and it’s not hard to see why.
Fresh corduroy for the taking!
As long as they keep offering up conditions like this, I’m going to keep getting emails from pass holders. And I for one welcome that! Before I leave Mass, let me mention that Sunday is Scout Day where your troop and family get a slope ticket, rentals, and a hour lesson for $50. All you have to do is mention Scout Day when purchasing your ticket at the window.
Not like they have to twist your arm to get to ski this
Before I go, I need to give a shout out to all of the SkiSoutheasters who are heading up to Snowshoe today. Kenny, aka theKENDOG, is already up there as are a few others who I’ve heard from this morning. I plan on heading up tomorrow bright and early myself, so Kenny will give you this update tomorrow morning – and I’m sure he will update us on this first day at the Shoe.
Take Care! When we speak again it will be March. There’s something mental about the transition from February to March. It really should be just another day, right? But it’s not – it’s something more. March has a different meaning, a different feel to it. Skiing and boarding in March is different than in February – it just is.
Drop me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org to let me know what you think or with suggestions on what we could be doing better.
