Welcome To the Other Side

First Trax

The rain has moved through the area and you should see mostly clear skies later this morning or this afternoon as the clouds break up.  This morning, when I was first checking out the forecasts for the resorts, a good number of them including Snowshoe, Sugar, and Wisp were showing a chance of snow according to weather.com.  Now as I’m typing this, it has largely been replaced by partly cloudy skies.  As of right now, only Beech is still showing a snowflake for today.  This whole weather thing is pretty crazy.  If you don’t like the weather just wait a minute – am I right?

The resorts took a bit of a hit with the rain and warm temps, but nothing too bad.  As Kenny mentioned yesterday, the Vortex gave them ample conditions to lay down a sick  amount of snow.  Beech had to close down a couple runs, including OZ, but for the most part things are as they were yesterday (but better).  It cooled off enough last night for a few resorts to make some snow of their own.  Appalachian, Beech, Cataloochee, Sugar, and Timberline to name a few all saw a bit of natural come down at the tall end of the storm as well.

We made it through the storm and today is shaping up to be a good one!

Wintergreen Ski Resort
Doesn't Look like Wintergreen was affected at all

Kenny mentioned yesterday in his [very cool] video post that it seems like it has rained just about every weekend this season.  I got an email the other day from our good friend Ken Ketchie, who is the editor of High Country Press, and he mentioned that the NC High Country has had rain for the prior 6 weekends or so.  I haven’t been keeping up with it myself, but I’m with Kenny in that it sure feels that way.  Doing a little research, take a look at how December ended up.

So, not too far off.  Rain is in there for every Saturday and/or Sunday for the month of December.

This is typically where I talk about the weather coming up, but Kenny did a great job covering that yesterday.  Check out his post yesterday for the juicy details.

One final note before I sign off.  The 24 hours at Snowshoe ends at 10am this morning.  I’m looking forward to seeing the winners and the pics and videos that we know will surface.  Also, we're starting to plan the SkiSoutheast Summit.  If you have a preference for location and timing please let me know.  We're thinking Canaan Valley February 21-23rd or February 28 – March 2nd.  I personally like the February 21-23 weekend, so let us know what you think.

Take care out there today – should be a good one!
