First of all…as of 11:30am we are seeing the HEAVIEST snow in the last 48 hours RIGHT NOW! It is unreal how hard it has been snowing. We were thinking things were tapering off and as you’ll see by Brad’s latest update…NOT SO FAST…MORE SNOW is hitting! Read On!

Forecast update:

The snow keeps flying and I mean flying! The winds are howling and temperatures are dropping along with the wind chills, so bundle up and watch the roads. Unlike Monday morning where temps were at or above the freezing mark, this stuff is going to make for some icy spots. We have about 24-36 more hours of this kind of snow. Which is nice and powdery and has a much higher liquid to snow ratio. Unlike Mondays snow which was wet and heavy this will be light and fluffy. So it will take less moisture to create more snow. The Northwest flow and upper level energy will stay over us for at least 48 more hours, but we start to run out of moisture to create snow late tomorrow. So the winds and cold may keep going into the weekend but the snow will start to taper off by Wednesday evening.

As for totals they are working out great as per my forecast. As of yesterday afternoon, Boone already had a foot and could be well on there to 20” by tonight and tomorrow. I think we can safely say most resorts in North Carolina, especial Avery county will see totals near 22-24” by tomorrow night. Snowshoe is pretty close to 20” this morning and could be closing in on 30” by Thursday morning. They will have the snow longer right through Thursday. It doesn’t really matter where you ski this up coming weekend everyone is going to have some packed powder and natural powder and tons of base.

Speaking of this weekend, with the east coast trough staying put for the most part another clipper system approaches late Friday and into Saturday. Temps looks plenty cold enough for all snow and we could get another 2-4” this weekend. This week and weekend has to be the best period of winter weather we have seen in quite some time. I often say early March is the best skiing in the southeast, because rates go down and the snow totals go up!

Good skiing and stay warm!

Brad
