The Countdown Begins

First Trax

Few things can get me more hyped up than the beginning of a new ski season. While weSamuel Adams Octoberfest are not quite there yet, the countdown has certainly begun. For me, two things really get my mind into season mode. First is the release of the buyer's guides, which hit the stands a couple weeks ago, and the second is when Samuel Adams Octoberfest arrives at the coolers and starts to show up on the taps.  Although, I might have jumped the gun a bit this year (as if that's even possible) and have already loaded up on a new set-up that I'm itching to break in.

As excited as I always get, this year takes it to a new level and brings on a whole new meaning for me as I start to take the reigns of SkiSoutheast.  I imagine like most of you, I have been a skier my whole life. Growing up in Boone, NC I spent more time at Appalachian Ski Mountain during the season than I did at home (or school). There was even a time in early high school where I would take the bus directly from school to the slopes. I would arrive in time to grab my gear from the locker and get about an hour of skiing in before the end of the day session.  Between sessions I would "do my homework" upstairs in the lodge and then ski the night until my Mom would arrive and pull me away. Those were certainly the days (thanks Mom!). But alas, we grow up (I'm sure you could find people who would argue that I'm not there yet), get responsibilities, and fight to make it on your own. And then, sometimes you get the opportunity to truly live your passion and reach the dream you had when younger.

I consider myself to be very lucky to have the opportunity to work alongside the SkiSoutheast team this year. We have already had our first huddle and are getting on the phone with the resorts and partners lining up what I expect to be a year for the books. The Old Farmer's Almanac is predicting a cold season ahead for the Appalachians with above normal snowfall for the Southern Appalachians – read the full report. We also have the Winter Olympics this season from February 7-23 – here's the full schedule. We are looking to team up with a few local restaurants/bars to host watching parties and I hope to have the opportunity to meet more than a few of you there. But why wait until February to get together? Let's plan a few random Après-ski meetups. We'll start a new thread in the forums to work out the details.

Here's another idea I would like to toss out there. In order to make it a bit easier for you to get the most up to date ski and weather conditions, I want to set-up daily emails to deliver a morning report right to your in-box. I would love to hear if you would be interested in this. Please email me at [email protected] with your thoughts.  And while we're at it, please contact me with any other thoughts you have on how we can make SkiSoutheast even better and more informative. We can never get started too early. Just think, this time last year we had only 54 days before Cataloochee and Sugar got the party started.

Hold on to your hats!
