Today is the day.

The 2020-21 ski season has arrived as Sugar Mountain is open for riding and sliding after a strong snowmaking effort by their mountain operation crews. (Be sure to #ThankASnowmaker)

Our own Kenny Griffin is on the slopes this morning and will be bringing us on-the-snow reporting and content throughout the day.

It is a bluebird day at Sugar Mountain.

To say Kenny is stoked is an understatement as he was the first one in line at the ticket window this morning. He has already shared some photos and the conditions look fantastic this morning as they are reporting an 8-22″ base with a manmade powder and frozen granular surface.

Coverage is looking good for opening day.

Sugar is open to the top and playing on five slopes with Northridge, Switchback, and the Flying Miles as well as the magic carpet area.

Sugar right now is the lone ski resort open for play (we are keeping an eye for an update on Cataloochee and will pass on any news once we receive it) but they aren’t the only snow sports area in the Southeast open for play this morning.

White Grass Ski Touring Center is taking advantage of the natural snow that fell in Canaan Valley and has been open for sliding since Tuesday.

Whitegrass Touring Center had great conditions to open the season.

It feels so good to be writing about open resorts this morning for the first time in 247 days when the 2019-20 season came to an abrupt end.

Snowmaking continued at a few resorts yesterday for much of the day – including Beech Mountain, Snowshoe, Cataloochee, and Sugar. Unfortunately, snowmaking equipment has been turned off this morning for the most part.

There might be a chance tonight and early next week to resume snowmaking, but it is going to be iffy. However, a colder pattern looks to be setting in late next week.

As a result, Beech Mountain has announced they are delaying their opening day from Saturday, but haven’t announced a new target opening date as of this morning.

It has been a busy few days, but we are finally able to hit the snow. That does it for today, but until next time, #ThinkSnow and #ThinkCold!
