Story by Kenny Griffin – [email protected]

Mike is out sick today so I thought I would just give a quick update on what’s going on this morning.  As he alluded to yesterday, the weather is not cooperating right now in terms of allowing for snowmaking at any of the resorts.  We had some underdeveloped snow last night and it’s put a pretty decent dent in what was already a small base at both Cataloochee and Sugar.  Both resorts are closed for today and are still hoping to open later this week.  Quite frankly, I don’t see that happening.  The forecast looks pretty mild and wet over the next few days.  Temperatures Wednesday and Thursday night will be borderline freezing, but I don’t think it will be enough to allow either resort to open.  It’s a bummer to type that, but it is what it is.

Up into West Virginia, I’m pretty interested to see what Snowshoe is going to do.  They have been making snow whenever possible for almost a month now and are planning to open on Thanksgiving Day.  I really wish they had some web cameras up there so we could see what it looks like.  They too will see some underdeveloped snow over the next few days but Wednesday and Thursday night temperatures should dip into the 20’s, allowing for snowmaking to take place.  They MIGHT even see a bit of natural snow overnight Wednesday.  So as of right now, I THINK they will be able to open.  We’ll let you know if things change over the next couple of days though so keep checking back!

NEW, BETTER WEB CAMERAS!

Mike told you guys about the brand new King Street Cam that we unveiled on High Country Web Cams last week.  Well, today I’m pretty stoked because I’m going to be ordering several more new cameras to put up across the region.  Over the next couple of weeks you can expect to see brand new live, streaming cameras at Appalachian Ski Mountain, Timberline Resort, Winterplace Resort, and we will also be replacing the camera at the top of Big Red at Sugar with a new one.  In addition, we’ll also be shipping out a new weather station to Winterplace, so you can get real-time, accurate weather info for the resort.  I’m really pumped that a majority of the resorts across the region are realizing the benefits of adding these cameras and weather stations.  It’s pretty exciting stuff!

So that’s all I have for now.  Like I said, as info comes in we’ll let you guys know immediately.  Keep checking back!
