Spring has arrived with Snow in the Forecast

It’s pretty cool that you can be a 3 season skier/rider here in the southeast (i.e. skiing/riding before December 21st, between December 21st and March 19th, and March 20th and beyond). In fact, I can’t even remember the last year that you couldn’t “Ski 3”. This is is definitely a nod to the longevity of many ski resorts in the region.

Over night temps across the region were in the 20’s. We’ve had temps below 30F for the last 5 to 7 nights now, depending on your location. This has made for a really nice stretch of cold, crisp nights and warm ‘corn snow’ days.

The pattern changes though as tonight we MIGHT see some snow flakes at Beech, Cataloochee, and Snowshoe. No real accumulation to speak of, but it will be nice to see flakes falling.

Beyond that, locations throughout NC, MD, and WV will have 3, 4, and even 5 chances of seeing snow falling before this weekend. Accumulations are expected at Beech, Snowshoe, and Wisp. While the other NC’s and WV’s will just see a ‘wintry mix’, on and off.

It will be sweet to see spring come with the appropriate fashion . . . a little winter white!

NC has the trifecta! Most ski areas open by state . . . Largest base depths . . . Snow MAY even fall Tonight

VA: 3 resorts will be open for skiing/riding the first weekend of Spring!

Bryce: 7 (of 8) runs open from 10am-3pm.

Here is an update from Bill N., “We are open! My guess, from my own skiing today, is the depth would be, on an average, a 12-18″ base with more on Bootlegger and the Meadow (in places) and some bare/thin spots on the other trails . . . Bootlegger has good coverage. Both main carpet lifts for beginners are still open.”

He goes on to say, “The question you all debate also applies here. How much base is enough? That is the deciding point . . . The weather will have the final say (and the customers, of course).

Bryce: Good coverage for true spring skiing. Just keep it down the middle of the runs

That’s all for today.
