Snowmaking Temps Return to the Southeast

First Trax

Stay up to date by getting notified of new posts!

As predicted, the temperatures dipped down enough over night to enable the guns to spew out the white stuff we all love so much.  Snowshoe, Timberline, Sugar, Cataloochee, and Beech where all making the most of the cold temps.

UPDATE: Appalachain Ski Mountain announced yesterday that they are pushing back their opening day to Monday (11/25) or Tuesday (11/26).

What is omitted from the list above is the mountain that was originally scheduled to open in 3 days – Appalachian Ski Mountain.

Current Conditions at Apalachian Ski Mountain

Even though they have pushed back, don’t be too concerned about this.  App has so much snow making power that they can just about go from a green field to skiing overnight.

We’ve been neglecting a few of our member resorts here lately due to the excitement of Cataloochee and Sugar opening up.  Most of the Southeast resorts have something down at this point – even if it is just a couple of piles like in the cases of Canaan Valley, Winterplace, and Ober…

Timberline Making Snow

Snowshoe is still the area’s powerhouse, creating whiteout conditions. They have pumped out a bunch of the stuff.  Take a look at the 24 hour web cam loop, http://www.resortcams.com/timelapses/timelapse.php?cam=snowshoeshavers&interval=24_hour.  I love to see the mountain come to life like that at night.

On with the day’s reports.

Both Cataloochee and Sugar are blowing snow this morning and will probably continue to as long as they can.  Cataloochee’s temps are predicted to touch 50 today with Sugar only getting to 45 degrees.  Regardless, at some point the guns will be turned off today (this morning) at both mountains.

Cataloochee Ski Area

Cat is reporting a 12-24 inch base, down 4-10 inches from yesterday’s report.  They are skiing on the same 4 runs as before; Lower Omigosh, Rabbit Hill, Easy Way, and Beginner's Luck, which are being supported by 2 lifts, Omigosh & Easy Way, along with 1 conveyor on Beginner’s Luck.

Sugar Mountain

If you looked at Sugar’s webcam yesterday or read our post you’ll remember that Sugar was looking a little bleak.

Sugar needed the snow and is making the most of it now.

Sugar Mountian Current Conditions

They are currently making snow and reporting a 6-30 inch base, up 2 inches from yesterday.  Sugar is also running with their same configuration, 2 slopes – Upper Flying Mile and Lower Flying Mile, with one lift going 3/4 of the way up the mountain.

Skies should be mostly clear today and with the mild temps, it looks like it is going to be another great day of skiing.  If you do get out there today remember that we are always interested in getting your pics and videos.  Email them to me at [email protected] and I’ll post them on the site for all to see.
