CHECK THE SNOW REPORT THIS MORNING FOR ALL THE DEETS…

We’re Getting SNOW in the Mountains this Morning! The snow seems to be socked in as moderate to heavy snow is falling at a nice rate that has visibility down a good bit. About two inches of snow has fallen overnight and this morning here in the High Country. You’ll see those in the natural snow totals via the SNOW REPORT.

Beech Mountain, though closed for the season, picked up another round of natural snowfall to take their season total to 74.6″ and about 93% of their normal snowfall.

Again – what a strange season. Heather Ransom from up at Snowshoe Mountain emailed me on Friday, saying, “We’re working on third winter up here lol. This is absolutely crazy!”

Indeed….check out this photo from Snowshoe Mountain this week.

Snowshoe is playing on 42 trails today! They’ve got an awesome Saturday on tap for you at The Shoe. The always hilarious Pond Skim is at 2PM on Lower Ballhooter and on top of that, they’ve re-opened Shay’s Revenge from top to bottom. Crazy!

How about 88″ of snowfall in MARCH ALONE at Snowshoe!?! Sean Cassell posted, “We’ve seen an incredible March at the Shoe, with more than 7 feet of snow falling throughout the month! More snow is expected this weekend making conditions amazing as we head down the home stretch of the season.”

All of this late winter cold and snow is going to hang around. The calendar might say “Spring” however area meteorologists are predicting that the colder-than-normal temperatures will be sticking around through April 5th…and some of the ski areas are staying open longer than usual.

Bryce Resort News…

Bill Nabers has been keeping us up to date with Bryce Resort news lately and he posted,

“I worked patrol today. It was good skiing in the morning but it got a little ‘sticky’ after about 1:30 pm. Can’t complain for March 23rd. Even about a dozen folks tubing from 3:30 till 5 pm.

1) Bryce WILL be open every day through next Saturday. (No tubing during the mid-week.)

Mon – Fri – 10 am -3 pm
Saturday 9 am – 5 pm
I don’t know about Easter Day, yet.

2) Bryce is planning to make snow tonight and possibly one or two more nights.

3) I will send you a picture but Bryce begin today in earnest the deconstruction of the ski cafeteria building that has been in use since the late 1960’s. A new two story $2+ million ski cafeteria, ski boutique, conference and meeting center building is scheduled to be completed before the 2018-2019 ski season kicks off.

Enjoy your weekend.

Thanks tons Bill.

David Lesher of Canaan Valley keeps on posting snow totals although Canaan Valley Resort is closed for the season. It’s 8° there this morning with snow falling. (A Trace of snow so far and 147″ on the season.)

While Canaan is CLOSED, someone didn’t know that. Check out the beautifully tracked snow there this morning. Also check out that the sun is shining up there a little bit.

Someone had a good time this morning at Canaan!

Appalachian Ski Mountain – Brad and his bunch have only one thing on their minds even with all of this awesome weather and natural snowfall – their guests. Conditions couldn’t be much better for App’s closing two day of their season (today and Sunday) however, they made snow over the last 48 hours to make things even better.

They posted, “Snowmaking is not ongoing during skiing hours and has improved snow conditions, slope coverage and base depth over the entire mountain to allow for great skiing and riding into our final weekend!”

Operating hours through Sunday are 9am-6pm

Cataloochee Ski Area – picked up a little natural snow yesterday although they never really report how much snow falls. Local CoCoRaHs reporters are only showing .5″ of an inch. It’s still snow, right?!?! They are getting a wintry mix right now as of this LIVE report. They are still skiing and snowboarding on 6 trails today.

Massanutten Resort – like Bryce, Mass is surprising their fans with additional snow days beyond a typical ski season. Kenny Hess and their guys reported,”The Ski Slopes will be open through Monday, March 26 from 9 am – 5 pm. The Slopes will be closed Tuesday, March 27 – Thursday, March 29. We plan to reopen the Ski Slopes for one last weekend from Friday, March 30 – Sunday, April 1 (weather dependent) 9 am – 5 pm.”

The sun is shining at the Virginia ski area, otherwise known as “The Nut”. They are playing on 5 slopes today.

We already talked about Snowshoe’s “Miracle March” and they are playing on excellent conditions and 42 trails today. Crazy, right?

SNOWY UPDATE…

As I type up this update LIVE it is now 9:30am and the snow is really falling quite heavily here as I look out my window towards Grandfather Mountain. About 3″ is on my deck.

Winterplace Resort is open today with 10 slopes and trails and they posted, “We may add some bonus days to this schedule. Evaluating adding Sunday, March 25th as a bonus day.”

Sugar Mountain is reporting 1″ of new snow overnight. (There is no question that another couple of inches has fallen since their early morning report.) They have 10 slopes open and they are still offering day and night sessions and they are the only ski area in the region offering night play on the slopes.

That’s it for this SNOWY SATURDAY in the mountains of Western North Carolina.
