This morning’s slope conditions report went much quicker than usual for this time of year. I wish that was a sign that resorts had their information to us quicker (some did) but that’s not why it went quicker. The reason was that there were less resorts to report on.
As we mentioned last night, Hawksnest has temporarily closed due to the mild weather. They will certainly reopen as soon as weather permits. Homestead is closed as well.
Other resorts remain open today, but with less slopes. Ski Beech closed two, and Sugar closed three. Base depths continue to drop except at Appalachian which is still reporting an AVERAGE maximum depth of 51". On On-Snow Reporters are saying that’s definately off, but whatever it IS, they DO have the BEST snow in North Carolina at this time.
We are getting a lot of emails about this weekend, as to "where the best conditions are in NC" and we’d have to say that right now, from all of the reports that we have received, Appalachian, Cataloochee and Wolf Laurel (in that order) have the most consistent snow (across the slopes they have open)in the state. Sugar seems to be holding okay. Beech is hanging in there.
With the forecast still holding for more mild temperatures and even some rain, we’ll have to see who closes up next.
