Shawnee Land in Winchester was the first commercial ski area in Virginia.

Open from 1958 to 1975, Shawnee Land had a vertical drop of 400 feet and was serviced by one t-bar and two rope tows. The t-bar was installed in 1966 with a vertical of 120 feet. The rope tows were hooked up to chassis of old trucks, as the ropes were wrapped around the tire rims. Old school! The area offered night skiing, snowmaking, and a lodge with a restaurant. There was also a pool and teen center.

Shawnee Land is now frequented by people on dirt bikes or four-wheelers and is also home to many vacation homes and lots.
