I had posted this somewhere else but didn't get any response. Sheepback was a proposed ski area back in the early sixties, shortly after Cataloochee opened. At the time is would have been larger than Cat., before it moved to its present location. They had cut a couple of trails and a snowmaking pond and then ran out of money. I had the chance to read the original proposal for the resort in the late 70's (when someone thought they could revive the plan) and there was a gondola planned from approx. Ghost Town parking lot up to the base of the area, ala' Ober.

I haven't been back to the site in over 20 years, so I doubt that anything can still be seen.

Wow -- our new spammer is pretty random -- 2 posts first the resurrection of this thread and then the post on the 2slickstix thread in gear swap:

As crowed as Cat gets, they could probably use another resort over in that area. It would be a nice buffer to keep the floridians from driving the extra distance to beech.

Ober is just over an hour away, that's close to being in the same area. More then adding a second ski area in the area, Cat needs to get ahold of that land and double up their trail count. Even getting access to the meadows would help.
