North Carolina’s Scaly Mountain is still in operation as you can see via www.ScalyMountain.com. However they closed ski ops shortly after the 2003-2004 ski season. Owner Gene Head decided not to fight the inconsistent conditions at that southernmost location in the state.
They now operate as a snow tubing operation only, however new investors have also planned for ATV trails and more.
Prior to closing, Scaly Mountain had three trails with a vertical drop of 225 feet. These trails were served by three lifts, including one double chair and two rope tows.
Scaly Mountain was a smaller than average ski mountain in possession of a relatively small altitude difference when you compare it to other ski resorts in the region.
With 12 acres of terrain, it was cozy enough to get to know all your fellow snow skiers.
