Heading up to Bryson City this weekend from the coast. Assuming the newfound gap area gets a couple of inches of snow was thinking of cross country skiing the Clingmans Dome road.

Anybody done this before and i would need to rent some cross country skis?

Any thoughts?

With 2-4" of rain in the forecast through Friday, I'd normally say your chances are pretty slim. Rain IS predicted to change to snow on Friday on the tail end though, if that could turn into a full day of snow at Newfound Gap you might get lucky. High temps in Knoxville are predicted to be 43 degrees on Friday, which should translate to about 30 for the high at Newfound Gap.

As far as XC rentals go, I don't know of anyone in Gatlinburg or Knoxville that has rentals. Might give Black Dome Outfitters in Asheville a call, 828-251-2001.

They'll have plenty of snow by Saturday/Sunday.

Here's a good gauge to see how much snow is in the higher Smokiess elevations. It's Leconte Lodge's daily blog with pics.

The biggest thing you'll have to keep your eye on is if Hwy 441 is open. The best place to find that out is @SmokiesRoadsNPS on twitter. Here's a link.
