A Little Snow This Morning, Lots of Sunshine for the Weekend

It’s Friday woohoo!  The weekend is almost here and it looks GOOD.  Even better, I am feeling much improved this morning than yesterday.  I felt like a zombie yesterday morning doing this report.  A 101 degree fever will do that.

We have a little bit of snow to talk about this morning for some, but every ski area is sitting pretty right now thanks to a miracle January.  It’s crazy to think, but when I am back doing this report on Monday it will be February.  What the heck?  Where is the time going?

The snow that I talked about yesterday seems to have been confined to West Virginia and Maryland overnight.  There’s still a dusting to an inch or so in the forecast for the North Carolina resorts, but that’s about it for them.  Here are the snowfall numbers so far this morning…

Wisp Resort: Trace
Canaan Valley Resort: 1″
Timberline Resort: 1″
Snowshoe: 2″
Winterplace: 1″

A nice little snow shower was right over Snowshoe this morning while I was doing my daily check of the webcams.  It was coming down pretty good for a few minutes there.  Screengrab is below.

It’s not quite as cold as yesterday morning.  Temperatures range from the 20’s to lower 30’s this morning and once again, not everyone made snow overnight.  I’d say about half of the resorts fired up the guns yesterday and overnight.  The snow last weekend and the cold over the past few days hasn’t made it necessary to make snow though, so don’t fret too much about that.  There’s plenty of snow to be had and if you look at the base depths on the snow report you’ll see what I mean.

Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month

As many of you know, January is Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month.  With January being almost over, this weekend is your last opportunity to take advantage of discounts and specials on lift tickets, rentals, and lessons.  I’ve talked all week about how nice the weather is going to be this weekend (50’s!), which means tomorrow and Sunday is a great chance to get on the snow and learn how to make some turns.  It’s going to be fairly mild, sunny, and there won’t be any snowblowers on.  Plus, the snow will probably be a little slushy by the afternoon which means it won’t hurt when you fall!  Those are perfect learning conditions.  Wintergreen offers lessons….

As does every other resort, so check out their websites of give them a call and see what they are offering.

Events

I was going through all of the resort’s websites this morning, taking a look at what’s going on this weekend in terms of events.  Surprisingly, there’s not too much going on as I suppose it’s just a lull in activity this weekend.  There are a few things going on though and I figured I’d highlight them.

MLK-Weekend-Fri-7-of-16Beech Mountain Resort’s College Week kicks off today/tomorrow.  Save big on lift tickets with a valid student ID and get discounts on rental equipment as well.  There’s also going to be live music in the brewery and Beech Tree Bar and Grille.  The event carries over to next weekend with two live DJ’s and music from Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band.  Basically, if you’re a college student the next weekend should be awesome out there.  Read more by clicking the link below.

Canaan Valley Resort is having Kicker Sports Demo Days this weekend. Demo the latest equipment free of charge during demo days held on the mountain 9am – 3:30pm.

wisp3Wisp Resort is having their Subaru Winterfest this weekend.  From their site…

The Subaru Winterfest team is traveling to Wisp Resort bringing music, giveaways, and free activities for people to enjoy. During the event, Subaru will offer hot chocolate, cider, cookies and info about the latest news & happenings at Subaru. Be sure to stop by the Subaru Igloo and say hello!

There’s going to be some ski and snowboard demos out there as well as Nordica and LibTech will be on site with their newest gear.  Should be fun!

lift-rental-iconFor the ladies, Wintergreen is beginning their weekly Women’s Ski Clinics on Sunday.

Women’s Ski Clinics, offered on Sundays from late January through late February, are geared for women who want to improve their skiing skills, taught by Wintergreen’s PSIA instructors.

Sunday Women’s Clinics are from 7:45 am (on snow at 8 am) to 10:45 am.  Sign up for one or all four.  ($119 each, or $400 for all 4, no additional discounts applied on all 4 days).  Lift tickets and rental equipment not included.  Sunday Women’s Clinics are offered on January 24, 31, February 7, 14.

Finally, this isn’t an event here for the Southeast, but the Winter X Games are taking place all weekend long out in Aspen.  ESPN will have a bunch of TV coverage of it and it’s always fun to watch skiers and snowboarders do some ridiculous stuff on snow.  It’s more gymnastics nowadays, but still cool to watch.

It’s going to be a great weekend in the mountains.  Last weekend and this weekend are going to give us the best of both worlds.  Cold and snowy last weekend, milder and sunny this weekend.  I like it.  Make sure to take lots of pictures and video if you do get on snow and post it over on the messageboard!

Everyone enjoy your weekend!
