Friday Eve and Winter is Back

Friday Eve is here (that’s what I like to call Thursday) and what a change in the weather between yesterday morning and today.  Yesterday, I was talking about blue skies and warm-ish temps.  Today, there’s snow already flying at several of the resorts and temperatures are starting to fall.  That image above is from Snowshoe.  Take a look at the video below that shows some decent sized flakes up at Canaan this AM as well.

Snow showers will continue today and tonight, mainly for the West Virginia and North Carolina resorts.  Here’s the most recent forecast for snowfall over the next 24 hours.

As you can see, about 1-3″ or so is expected at the resorts in NC and 3-6″ up in northern West Virginia and western Maryland.  The wind is going to be howling today though so it’s going to be hard to get a really good measurement.  Tomorrow should be awesome though with some nice wind loaded spots.

Temperatures are also going to plummet throughout the day and will stay chilly tomorrow.  Lows tonight at the resorts are going to be in the single digits and even negatives for some!  The air with this front is really dry too, so the combo of really cold and really dry air is going to make for some perfect snowmaking conditions today, tonight, and through tomorrow.

Looking ahead, more snow is in the forecast for Saturday.  It’ll be a pretty similar event to this one but a little less snow.  Bitter cold is in store for Sunday as the coldest air of the season invades the Southeast, and the entire eastern United States for that matter.  We’re talking highs in the single digits.  Yikes.  Monday and Tuesday look…interesting.  Some more snow (maybe a decent amount?) is possible but uncertainty is still high.  Stay tuned for that.

All of this is going to make for a fantastic weekend for all the President’s Day vacationers.  They are flocking to the mountains for a taste of winter, and winter they shall get.  I hope they’re ready!

It should be a fun day to watch the snow fly!  As always, you can head on over to Resort Cams to see live shots from just about every single resort in the region.  I’m expecting a busy day on that site.  I know I’ll be tuned in most of the day.
